Trying to winterize my coop I made a big MISTAKE! Help!

wisconsingarden chick--you might need more ventilation--if ammonia is building up in your coop, the girls might not like being in there very much. check to see if you have an ammonia smell and check your ventilation.

Thanks, but I don't think that's it. I remove their droppings daily. It's a small coop, so it doesn't take me long. And you can see from the photo they get light. Can it be that the cold is not bothering them too much so they prefer to be out?

Ventilation (I also always leave the pop door at least partway open, as advised by our poultry extension specialist):

The Styrofoam will pass through them as it is relatively indigestible. With as little as it sounds like they were eating, there will be minimal traces of chemical contaminants hitting their bloodstream and eventually the eggs. However, if it is concerning to you, you may not want to eat the eggs laid for a few days until the contaminants pass.

Husband loves his garden, Chickens love perlite styrofoam he mixes with potting soil. They eat it all the time. Happy Healthy Chickens here.
