I am in Ft Myers, right in the middle of the forcasted path. We have been busy since yesterday puting things away. Here is a list of things we thought of so far....

1. Put all outdoor lawn furniture, grills, decorations in the shed.

2. Secure large items like swingsets to the fence posts with rope.

3. Added straps to the horse trailor and RV and anchored to ground.

4. Put up hurricane shutters

5. Stocked up on drinking water and non perishable foods

Things we will do as the storm approaches:

Put chickens in crates in the shed

Let the horses out of the barn and into the pastures in case the barn dosen't make it. They have a pond to drink out of.

Fill both bath tubs with water (we have a well, so if we lose power, we lose water also) We use this water to flush toilets and to wash up in.

Fill stock tubs for the cows

All animal feed is secured in the horse trailor

Better safe than sorry!!!! Be safe everyone!!!!

reading all of these messages i once again realize in this new ( to us ) house in the woods i am so completely in trouble if and when we get another hurricane. there is still so much to fix up outside to make it safe in gale winds. i think the shed would be completely demolished, there would be downed trees and other natural damage. this is also my first house with well water....
arrrgh i hope u all are safe and sound and i guess i need to pick the pace up here as the weather experts say we are due for a really big hurricane here. the theory is once every 70 yrs (and we are on yr 68). the last biggish one was Gloria in 1985 and it was not that big but did lots of damage. i was in college, not a mom. big difference!

* Gonna be a rough ride for me. DH didn't think it was "serious". (He wouldn't do any prep.) Started raining at 8:3O this a.m. and hasn't let up much. I already have more water than I can deal with and we are just getting started. AND it looks like the storm is strenghtening and I am anxiously awaiting the 11 a.m. report with the new figures. Meanwhile, he is safely eschoned at work and I'm here trying to keep it together!!

We also have well water that runs on an electric pump. Before a storm I fill up 55-gallon drums with water to use for flushing & washing. (One of my future projects will be to place these drums under the downspouts and harvest rainwater throughout the year. A faucet must first be attatched to the bottom of the drum to make it easy to empty.) And throughout the year I collect water jugs, from 1-5 gallons, that we fill with tap water right before a storm. This can be used for drinking, cooking, and tooth brushing. I have a Brita filter to run the water through for drinking. I don't know why folks go out buying bottled water to flush their toilets.

Last hurricane I would put a few gallon jugs of water out in the sun all day so we would have nice warm water for bathing right before sunset. This year I've bought a black rubber camp shower thing, that heats a few gallons of water in the sun and has a hose & nozzle.

Hope we DON'T have to use it!

AAGGHH!!! I forgot that I have 2 incubators going. One on day 9 with 15 eggs and the other on day 4 with 12 eggs (these are my Harvest Breeze Farm eggs!!!!....can't let anything happen to them!!)

We do have a battery pak thingy that I can plug the bators into in the event of a power loss. Don't know exactly how long it would last though.
