I swear I was just going for pine shavings (for the gerbils) and cat food... nothing chicken related was on my list!
Of course they have it set up so you have to pass the chicks to get to the cat food. But I was going to be strong... no, not going to get anymore chicks... after all, I have 10 in the brooder and 36 eggs ready for the incubator Sunday night. Nope, don't need any more chicks.
Well, then I saw the ducklings. Boy, are 1 week old ducklings big! Then the chicks. Sigh... they have banties
the most adorable little things. But they are straight run, and assorted, and I dont' know enough about banties to figure out what kind they are. So I'm safe. right? Nooooooooo... that's when I notice they are half price!!! So I try to walk away, when the guy takes one look at my face and says "So, you want me to set up a box for you?" LOL yeah, I am weak.
So I think "I'll stick to the 6 minimum". Yeah, right... I see some that look like mini-me's of my barred rock chick (what kind of bantams are barred?). There is one with a dot on it's head, the rest don't have dots. I think I'll get 4 of those. Then I notice that there is only one black one left. I can't leave it by itself so I have to get it too. Ok, only need one more. I found the only one in there with black skin (hoping that makes it a silkie), and put her
in the box.
Then I think... hmmm.. Ed wanted some meaties. So I tell the guy to get another box. The older farmer guy who is watching me this whole time busts out laughing. Thanks, Gramps, you aren't helping!
With box #2 in hand, I tell the worker dude I'm going to get 3 cornish rocks. They are mixed in with all the other standard chicks and neither of us are quite sure which are whcih so I just grabbed the 3 biggest in there. I mean nothing grows faster than a meatie, right? Then I notice a teeny little chick in with the monsters. It's got black skin too. I tell the dude, this is a banty chick, you want me to put him back in with the others?. He says no, it's ok there. Welllllll.... I can't leave the bitty one in with the giants, why (s)he'll get squashed... so in the box she goes.
Dude says, you really should get them in multiple of 6, it keeps them warmer on the way home. I say, "It just says minimum of 6. Besides, I only live 10 minutes away. And the 3 meaties are already bigger than all 7 of the banties, they'll be ok". Besides, I don't think 2 more large chicks would even fit in the box!
Once I get home, I know all 20 1 week olds won't fit in my dog cage brooder now. So I converted my guest bathtub into a temporary brooder. Yeah, I might be in trouble when Ed gets home
, and I am going to be late for work because I just had to rush to the computer to tell people who might understand my chick addiction.
