TSC Chick Days: What breeds?

I've never been to the chick days at my TSC. I've been getting ready, as I'm planning on getting chicks from them this year. I called to ask what they would be selling and got told "well you know, the reds in straight runs of pullets, and banshees too." I smacked myself on the head, drew in a breath, prepared my corrections in my head, and sighed, "Ok. Thanks. Bye."

So Lord only knows what my TSC sells. Haha!

Last year ours had....

Standards: RIR, Amberlinks, Sex Links (black and red), Gold Comets, Light Brahmas, White Leghorns and Barred Rocks.

Bantams: Cochins (frizzled and smooth), Old English, Sebrights, Polish, d'Uccles, Silkies, Brahmas, Japanese and maybe some I missed. Those were just the breeds I bought.

Ours used to be supplied by Ideal Poultry, which has a huge selection of chicks so there was always tons of variety. I read that Ideal poultry has canceled their dealings with TSC to focus more on Mom and Pop shops and whatnot, so I have no idea about this year for our area. Quite frankly, it ticks me off. I prefer chicks from Ideal but it costs much more to order them myself, and the Mom and Pop shop here won't allow me to go back and pick out my own like TSC did. Sadness.

Boy, am I glad there are actual feed stores around here, not just TSC. (Although I have shopped at a nearby TSC for things, just not chicks.) I'd hate to come home with banshees.

Ooh, but they sound like great guards! Better than geese, I'll bet.

I just couldn't believe that the lady on the phone said that in all seriousness. Banshees!?! Really? *sigh* I'm hoping that she's only paid to answer the phone, and not to care for the chicks while they are there.

I did call my local feed store, but he told me that the were really only getting laying breeds, not show breeds (that hardly lay at all, he says) like buff orpingtons. It had been my understanding that orps are great layers, so that kinda turned me off from there too. Not to mention that he wanted to sell me broiler feed for my layers, and talked to me like I didn't even know that chickens had feathers.

So I'll check both of them out, and try to pick from the store with the healthiest looking chicks.

Airilith, do you mind me asking what feed store you go to? I am on the Eastern Shore, VA also (Accomack County) I am getting my first ever babies shipped next week and I drove all the way to Pocomoke to the TSC for supplies. Would love to find somewhere closer.

I go to Parksley Livestock Supply, in (yup you guessed it) Parksley. I get my feed from them, but I too got most of my supplies from TSC. Be careful, as they are not the most knowledgable people. So ask your questions on here and be prepared by time you get there
