TSC chicken coop kits.

Check craigslist or Facebook market place for coops. I’m in Florida and we had a metal shed a couple of years ago and it basically blew apart the first year so I don’t recommend. I’m also searching for a coop as we are not handy at all and I’ve got chicks in the bathroom ;).

12 chickens.
My suggestion would be a 8x8 pen at the smallest.
That's 8 sheets of plywood, and a few 2x4's.
Get some TIN from homedepot, enough to cover it. They also have plastic things that seal the gaps in the tin to the wood. (RODENT PROOFING)

Building a chicken pen is not rocket science. Your chickens would be happy in a cardboard box, if it didn't collapse during the rain.

My main piece of advice, is always build your pen with this in mind.
You are NOT trying to keep your chickens in the pen, you ARE trying to keep predators out.

Be super careful getting used coops. Their poop can carry disesases, as well as their feathers.
Once you get these diseases, you almost cant get rid of them.
You will have to kill the entire flock and try to clean everything.

I never buy chickens, only eggs and let broody chicken incubate. Or you can incubate.
I never buy anything used. I don't want to loose my flock cause someone else sold me contaminated stuff.

You never know. That person may have a disease and he cant get rid of it. So he sells his existing coop, kills his flock, and moves his coop.
You dont want to be the one buying that coop.

So cleaning and bleaching wouldn’t get rid of the germs?

Its possible but extremely hard, and for me, not worth the risk of contaminating your yard. You have to clean every square inch perfectly. If you leave any germs, then it starts all over.
Some diseases are in the poop, some are in feather follicles.

Its a huge risk that im not willing to take.

My dad had a disease that he just couldn't kick. He tried for years, cleaning the coop. He even scooped all the dirt out of the coop and replace it with new dirt. It didn't work.
He ended up getting rid of his chickens for about 5 years, then tried it again. He doesn't have the problem anymore. But it was real hard to get rid of it. I was young, and he called it something different, but it sounded like Merricks disease. Merricks disease is a terrible thing to watch.
