I got these two hens from a friend of mine, that got them from TSC for .50 if I remember right. They were the ones left over that didn’t sell. We have no clue what breed they are. They lay dark brown eggs, not chocolate but darker than my others. They lay daily but are more flighty than my Orpingtons and Australorps. They did have a rough start in life with all the other chicks getting eaten. Not sure if that would contribute to their flight I was or if it is a breed thing. Any ideas??

PS the egg photo: the two on the left are the ones we suspect from the two hens

If the chickens just recently started laying it’s not uncommon for them to lay double or even triple yolker eggs. They’re usually bigger than normal eggs. As they get older their eggs usually balance out into normal eggs.

Just curious. How much do they weigh?

She looks like an Amber Star to me. (I could be wrong.) It's basically a white version of a Red Sex Link. Did she just start laying? If so, as the poster above said, it's not uncommon for new layers to lay double yolkers. Going back to the breed, my Red Sex Link hen lays the same size egg as that large one in your picture everytime she lays, and she's two years old. Some breeds lay jumbo sized eggs.

I’m not sure. I haven’t weighed them. I will try to do that today and let you know.

Amber Star lays a medium egg. TSC has been selling California tans. I bought 6 of them last month. They lay xlarge to jumbo eggs @300+ a year.
The dark colored eggs make me think Amberlink for the mix :) I would expect California Tans or Tetra Tints to lay cream to tinted eggs :)
I had never heard of California Tans and Amberlink. I think they are one of those but my girls combs aren’t as big.?.? The CT having leghorn in them would make sense with their flightiness, but they seem to fit the description of both.

Thanks. I have a pullet laying 3-3.5oz eggs.
