I would only put the olive oil or vasaline on the chicks showing pasty butt. Pasty butt comes from being stressed and that their systems are neutral (no bacteria)
You can mix 1/4 teaspoon of plain yogurt in with some chick crumbles as a treat to give them. This provides probiotics that they need to get good tummy bacteria and helps reduce pasty butt. I like to give this to them once everyday for the first 3 to 4 days just to give them a good head start and they do love it. (there are a few that do the oh yukk thing though)
Some chicks will clear up after the first bout; but some take a little longer getting over the Pasty Butt. As long as you help keep their hinies clean they will grow out of it and be ok.
