TSC gave wrong chick- I was given a Leghorn and I have concerns

So I was given a leghorn instead of a Wyandotte yesterday. I even asked if they were SURE it was a Wyandotte and they said yes. I didn’t think so but this is my first time owning them so I took it home. Being my first time owning chickens I can only go off what I’ve read/heard- and living in a neighborhood I’m looking for docile, quiet, friendly chickens. I didn’t think leghorns sounded like what I wanted and was trying to avoid getting one. So- are my concerns valid? If I took this chick back tomorrow and asked to return it (TSC) does anyone know if they would A) take it back? B) resell it or if they would C)kill it or something? I don’t want it to be killed. It seems really healthy and robust... but I don’t know what my options are or how serious my concerns really are.

I actually live across the street from a TSC. I have called them often. The corporate people are actually easier to deal with than local manager. (it's okay, he doesn't like me either...)
Call them after 7 am, 877-718-6750, they usually are pretty helpful.

I had an EE that used to get to the highest point possible and preach a sermon at the top of her lungs for about an hour before she would go lay her eggs.. Basically.. get everyone ignoring her then slip off quietly into her secret spot.

I got a Leghorn, expecting it to be the least liked bird for your stated concern reasons.. Turned out to be the bird everybody looked forward to seeing most, very stunning with that huge red comb on top of her little body.. and oh boy full of character and overall good flock member!

All chickens are individuals regardless of breed. Mix ups happen ALL the time.. not just at TSC, though they are notorious for it.. Most of their employees will ONLY be able to tell you what's on the label that came from the hatchery. People often presume a white chick with straight comb to be Leghorn.. but it could perhaps also be a Cornish cross or white Rock.. Maybe, just maybe.. it will turn out to be a pleasant surprise.. How many times have I worried about what never came to pass.. that's like paying debt you don't owe! F-E-A-R.. False Evidence Appears Real.

I DOUBT they can take back a chick.. but I'm not sure of their live animal policy.. bio security is a REAL concern for many of us!

I think you are correct that it may not be a Wyandotte at all.. noting I HAVE seen hatchery Wyandotte with a straight comb in the past. I hope you can resolve this in a satisfactory manner at the local level knowing that MOST of us really ARE trying our best!

One thing I DO know.. the gender accuracy is usually 85-95% depending on hatchery.. When ordered from the hatchery.. they will reimburse your pullet chick cost but will not replace it or take the rooster back.. THIS is where some local feed stores SHINE above multi conglomerate (slave master) corporations! TSC certainly ain't perfect.. they're like the Walmart of feed stores.. I'm thankful to have both and more hours available and for the things they do have to offer.. I sort of wish they weren't trying to expand their inventory so much.. as it's clearly diminishing worker and management moral.. if you've never been subject to the weight of the store on your shoulders.. maybe cut them some slack?!

I can only imagine your surprise at discovering that you didn't get the breed you expected...clearly, that's unpleasant.

My experience with Leghorn hens is that they can be some of the friendliest hens in the coop. I had one that was always chatting at me, always interested in what I was doing, and completely ok with being held. She was a special girl, and though I have had chickens of many breeds since then, she was a standout. I hope you keep your surprise pullet and that she's as great as my girl was.

I don’t know of any small local places but I bet that’s my fault. I think I will keep it and if it becomes too loud my cousin will take it. She’s got a farm. I’d hate to return it and have them toss it in the trash or something. I *may* ask to be allowed to get one more single chick tomorrow that’s actually the one I asked for.

Thanks I think I’ll give her a shot. I have a family member who can take her if she doesn’t work out. I hope she does though. I get crazy attached to all my pets.
