OK wife wants to get ducks and our local TSC has Rouen and the wife loves the Rouen. Of course TSC gets the ducklings straight run or unsexted. Is there a way tell the differences between males and females at 1-2 weeks? Coloring?

No, unless they have been vent sexed. But that requires training, as you could injure the duckling.

I thought I saw a video that said females are darker or lighter at this stage. Of course I can’t find the video

Hey its a hard subject. i wanted to make an artical about it but i dont have the experience. I will share what i do have

So all the ducklings ive seen at home and on here i always kept on eye on what they looked like as ducklings and what their gender turned out to be. i studied so hard i was so confident that i ran out and grabbed a duckling i swore was a female. WRONG! it was a male. happened twice to me even after studying. So heres some pics of my thaughts. On all breeds not rouens specificaly

I also have tried, in vain, to determine gender when they are little. I am wrong more often than right. I would suggest asking where your tractor supply gets it's ducklings. Then look up that hatchery. If it sells sexed ducklings but your tractor supply is selling straight run, I fear you will end up with lots of boys. If the hatchery only sells straight run, at least the probability would be half of each. Even then though, that is really too many boys. So, unless you are ready to deal with extra boys, I would spend the money and order pre-sexed ducklings.

Well after a few months of hoping that the ducks were females, I went outside today and saw both of the ducks heads are turning green. Males, damn. Wide doesn’t want males. Anybody want two free male Rouen ducks in central jersey?
