TSC Special Breed

Fred's Hens :

They only do it to create traffic and to sell other items.

Bingo! They are making their money selling brooder lights, feeders, wire, etc. to newbies like me. When I went to my TSC to pick up chicks I was lucky because the gal that helped me was very knowledgeable and obviously had chicken raising experience. To see if she really did know her stuff I tested her by making a completely bogus statement and she corrected me.

Ok so it wasn't a test. I was just a wee bit confused from the research I had been doing leading up to the great chicken experiment at our house.

I'm a somewhat regular of this TSC and she didn't look familiar so the manager may have just hired some experienced "seasonal help" to help make sure you leave with more stuff than you can carry.

Thats the problem I was having at Rural King with them not taking care of the chicks they gave me 14 for free just cause they didnt want to clean bums. Well the managers way of taking care of that? He hired me I start next week.

I was in tsc yesturday and asked what kind of chicks they had. after talking to another employee they figured out that they have red ones and black ones.

I have 2 TSC's that I go to. One of them doesnt know anything about the chicks and the other one doesnt know anything and doesnt care. I have heard the manager say that he could not wait until they were all gone. They dont take care of them well at all! Last year there was one that had died and the rest were walking all over it. I told the manager and they were like ...yeah, ok. Never even bothered to pick it up out of there! Everytime I go in there they never have food or water. Im sure they dont make much money off of the chicks but it should be like anything else they sell, they should know the product. After all it is bringing them in business for other things!

The employees turn over all the time, hey!! it's fairly low wage retail. Not much interest in being educated about them. The Chick Days are brief. It's merely a "door buster" thing anyhow. Expecting anything from this mess is somewhat naive.

But... the good news for chicken keepers is that one can impulse buy.

Over the past few years, I've gotten lots of free, or almost free chicks. Manager wants them gone, grab all the pasty butt chicks for free, etc.

So, in a way, there is something in the buyer being the informed one and the seller being uninformed and unmotivated. It is what it is.

I have to agree...the one yesterday the bins were all empty..according to the person there they get approx 300 baby chicks in on wednesday and by the end of the day all of them are gone..the bins were dirty..the shavings were wet with poop and spilled food..but empty. If they were all gone on wednesday and I went on on a sunday...why are the bins so dirty? I have found this at both locations both times I went in looking for baby chicks. I like the store..I get my food and supplies from them, I just feel like they should hire extra help from someone who wants to help with the chicks and knows something about them. If the ones working there don't care about the chicks..it shows poorly on the store itself....which is too bad...it is a good store! How long is the chick season for these stores?

Ours is till May...

It's been interesting (and kinda sad) to read everyone's descriptions of their local TSC's attitude toward Chick Days. Mine is fantastic in comparison... granted, it is impossible to find help with the chicks when you need it (hence I help myself!), but the bins are clean, the chicks are healthy, and they have plenty of food and water. The labels on the bins are accurate, to the best of my ever-expanding knowledge. They even had the pullet bins labeled correctly... granted, the breed was color-sexed, but still...

The two staff that I spoke to on different occasions said that they never have any problems selling all of their chicks, and this was without me even asking them directly. One said that they are constantly ordering more in order to keep up with demand. I will definitely get chicks there again as long as these standards are maintained.
