TSC Special Breed

I would have to say while I saw the dirty bins..I have not gone there when there were chicks in the store since the fisrt time I happened to pop in..so I have not seen the cases of sick chicks or mixed up breeds.so I can't fairly make any judgements with that aspect of the store..I am hoping when I go this week I will have a good experiance with buying the chicks...I do love the store and have always had good luck there finding what I needed...I hope I have the same positive experiance that you have had with buying the chicks..but it has helped reading the post on this topic..I feel like I know more now and will be prepared when I go in....

Yes, agreed! This thread was an eye-opener...I guess since I have only been to my local TSC and no others, I just assumed that they were all the same

It bums me out that the poor little chicks have to suffer because of some idiot staff.

I won't buy chicks from our tractor supply store. The chicks are in bins on the floor kids picking them up putting them in wrong bins the employees don't know anything selling a meat birds to a child as a pets and egg layers.

I go to our other farm store where the birds might be in a bin but up on pallets where little kids can't reach the cages are clean and birds are health and the staff knows about them. I have only gone to tractor supply a few times when they have chicks and all the post I read on here I just don't think I will buy from them. I might look at their ducks and see how they are.

i work at TSC and i don't tell a customer anything unless i know it to be true

we also require that an associate assists customers with chickens, ducks, and rabbits so they are not injured or mixed up, although we have very different breeds.

i am responsible for having someone feed and water the chicks morning and evening and the pens are cleaned EVERY morning.

TSCs aren't the same everywhere, but i dont want people to generalize TSC employees as lazy or uneducated!

TSC is a franchise organization for the most part, it's going to vary a lot.

I know the folks are usually hired based on retail experience, not livestock knowledge. I am happy to say that the TSC I go to is quite good, there are at least 3 people who do know birds and they all care for the chicks quite well.

Our TSC was fine. Everything was cleaned, plenty of clean water and food... There were wire cages on the top of each bin to keep little ones from reaching in. Signs posted to ask an associate for help (same with the rabbits.)

However, I can tell that the associates have had enough of the chicks. They are doing well with their job, but tired of doing it. I have actually heard one worker say that they can't wait until they are gone.

At least the chickies are taken care of.....

I will say we (the employees) get tired of the chickens because it's additional work on top of our usual load. People come in with 10 kids and try to pry the chicken wire off to get in the pens.

When we're slammed with customers, it's hard to explain to people that we usually don't allow children to be in the pens or holding the chickens while walking thru the store. It gets stressful having to watch out for them AND take care of them while doing our normal duties.

I enjoy having the chicks in the store, but I'm one of those employees who is glad we don't have chickens year round.

I can understand the fustration you must feel..as a customer we want what we want when we want it...at times it is the dedicated worker who takes the blunt of the fustration because you are the one who comes forward with the "may I help you?" I can only imagine the extra workload you have..I just raised 17 baby chicks in my living room and I was at times overwhelmed with just one child wanting to "help"...Could not picture having over 200 chicks to be in charge of with many, many children wanting to "help"
