Tumbler pigeons info

I have some Birmingham/Parlor crosses. When let out and placed on the ground, they will fly up when startled to about 15 feet high and then roll down into the ground.
If startled in the loft they will roll off of their perches into the ground.

So there are different breeds of parlors? Mine never roost. One of mine can't even fly at all, the other can get to a perch about 18" off the ground and that's it. But that one is the one that rolls the best.

Shelley, they are crossed between Birmingham rollers and palor rollers.
All the palor rollers I have had and seen only fly when they are very young, before they start tumbling on the ground
I got rid of my parlor rollers because my dogs found they could spook them and they would rollover to the wire where the dogs could catch them.
There are also parlor tumblers, which only roll a few times on the ground and coop tumblers that roll in the air and on the ground.

Aha! I think I get it now

So I think I have 1 tumbler and 1 roller. 1 of ours will only rollover 2 or 3 times before it goes walking off. The other 1 will roll until it hits a bump in the ground, or anything else for that matter. That is the one that can 'fly' enough to get on the 12"-18" perch, the other one (that only rolls 1 or 2 times) can't fly at all. But I don't know how old they are either. The one that can fly a little is nesting with one of my dad's young homers, that should be an interesting mix

I keep my Parlor birds in small cages. Like the rabbit hutch size. This keeps the birds much more calm. I fell parlor Tumblers and rollers kept in a open loft is just asking for a injured bird. In a big open loft they stay spooked and constantly roll in the loft on the hard floor. The smaller cages make them fell more calm and not as much room to roll and get hurt. Here is my set up.

Keith C. , Thank you for making me aware that there are different kinds of Parlor Rollers. I want the ones that more less just rolls on the ground. Sorry to hear that you got rid of them .

yardbird tx , thanks for the info . and sharing your set up,I like the idea . I had thought about putting Parlor Rollers in the loft when i find some but now will do the cage thing instead i beleive.

shelleyd2008 , They sound so kool and yea i bet the dog does just love them .Thanks for the info i had no idea that the Parlors could fly at all .WOW til 4-6 months huh , yea that sure will be awhile

If I were wanting to get Birmingham Rollers to put in a wire floored 8 square foot, rabbit hutch type thing. How many pigeons could I put in there or would that even work for pigeons? Please help me! I want to learn more, previous threads have also helped alot.

I've read that you should have 4 square feet per pair, and that's what I try to go by. Just ask questions and I'm sure everyone will do their best to help you out. Also try http://www.pigeons.biz great pigeon forum where you can learn a lot.
