One of our silkies has had a hard lump in her abdomen since last night. We figured it was egg bound so we tried the suggested treatment to free her of it, but got nothing. We tried sticking a q-tip with natural lubricant, olive oil and still nothing. So my mom carefully stuck her finger in with said lubricant but wasn't able to locate any egg in her oviduct. Which makes us thing tumor. She has never once later in her two years of age. But nor has she ever crowed. She was however, mated by our roos many times and even asked for it from them. I have recently been seeing some really dark poos in her pen and have noticed some balance issues along with her hard distended abdomen. She still has an appetite and has a full gullet every night. She has however been found with runny pops stuck to her but often lately, but is still full of energy and life. So what do you guys think?

Sorry, can't get pics until morning.

It can be hard to know exactly what you are feeling. Could it be her gizzard? Lash egg material from internal laying could be possible, but a tumor could also be one possibility. Since she has not laid eggs before, it could be that she has been laying internally. It can be common to find masses of egg matter inside the abdomen when doing a necropsy on a hen who has not been laying normally. I would try to get her eating and drinking, offering water, moistened feed, and scrambled egg up to her beak with a lid or small cup.

She eats and drinks like a pig already. There was never any worry for that. She never once layed an egg, so it is possible she layer internally, though a finger was stuck bare skin up her but to feel for anything. Nothing was there. Her oviduct was bare of anything. Would it be hard to feel necropsy material with your finger??

Is the lump internal within the abdomen or sticking out? I had a hen with a lypoma that was a hard lump, but it was more external.

Reproductive issues are unfortunately very common. I've lost a couple trying basically a spay surgery to remove ovarian cancer.

Diagnostics to determine what was going on included radiographs and ultrasound, but ultimately the vet recommended surgery for something unknown that needed to come out.

The dark poo sounds similar to one of my hens that did have a tumor. It had weakened her and she got a gram negative bacteria infection in her gut which caused a lot of partially digested items, and dark sticky poop.

Septra Antibiotics cleared up the infection and got her poop back to normal.

Hopefully your hen will have a good outcome!

Unfortunately it's not meant to be for fluffy. Poor silky didn't have what it takes to survive. We necropsied and found two tumors, one gigantic almost softball sized one, and one smaller gflat golf ball sized one above it. The large one was in the oviduct, and the smaller one was outside it, just above it.
