Those are cute, but they also make it hard not to open up a hatchery website and order 25.....
I had a chick hatch last month with a naturally totally bare neck. Had some in flock many years ago.. thought it was lost as none showed up for many years so it was a nice surprise:
OMG I know what you are talking about. We had to move birds into new coops today my DH (who is a member of the U.C.C.L club.) Has been off work the last few days so he figured he would finish a couple of the coops. SOOOO we moved some birds around into the coops and I moving the young ones around and they are light weights(EEs). I move over to the Turken turnout pen. Started grabbin the girls to be moved and OMG if Gretchen didn't feel like she was carring a 10lb bowling ball in her. After Hubby handed me Toasted and Lit Red Who I thought were heavy weights were actually light weights after he handed me Gretchen.
As for using Turkens as a meat bird I think You could get a nice roaster out of them. If you are not in a major hurry to get them in a freezer They would work. I mean you have the guys running around anyway to make you laugh, you might as well enjoy the show before the meal.
I mean there are breeds out there that are raised to be on your table by 10-16 weeks.
Ha ha I'm in no rush. Planning on getting/hatching chicks in early to mid spring so they will have all summer and early fall to run around and be chickens. We are going to try very hard not to make any extra boys into pets. One pet roo is enough!! LOL
Yeah thats easy to say now but just wait you might have 2 roos running around. We have a new found out roo(was told it was a pullet) they were wrong. I did a swap with a guy I gave him 2 straight run chicks (nn) for 2 "girls" (nn) to add back to my line the one was looking to be a "calico" and the other a blue hue to her. I thought cool colours why not do the trade. I would of done the trade even if he said they were straight run I would of just made sure to watch more closely on who might become a roo.
Well of course the "calico" one is a roo (Squirt) He is getting the little spur tail feathers and as for "blue hue" (skeeter) She is still a she but is no longer blueish she is black with some white flecks on her. NOT barred but she looks like she got some spray splatter on her tail feathers. And she is lookin to be a bantam.
SOO not only did I get rid of 2 peeps for 2 peeps. I have 2 peeps That I have to make a new coop for bec. they have names now and my kids (and hubby) think they are cool looking. So we now have 2 Roos 1 Full sized Turken (Kly.) and 1 mini sized Turken (Squirt).
I can totally see that happening to me!! Heck its already started with 4 little peeps from a feed store (they were supposed to all be pullets) last summer. What was the harm they were so little and cute. Plus chicken feed is WAY cheaper than dog food and FREE eggs once they grew up! Now they all have names, come when called and are a endless scource of entertainment. All I can think about is adding more to the flock. Mo our roo was the slowest to feather out and he kept changing colors. I'm not sure what you call the color he finally turned out to be but we think he's handsome. He went from this:
to this
to this
to this
to finally this
P.S I got the opportunity to weigh him at work a couple weeks ago he is was 7 lb 9.5 oz. Roaster size?
