The BBwhites, thats why so many are raised every year, just dont try keeping them to long. Best feed to meat, just like the cornish rock is the best meat chicken.
The fact about one breed taste better than another, all taste the same to me. If fresh and not frozen. Now the palm dont have the big round breast.
Have ate about 4 breeds, the eastern wild taste different, think that because of diet and age.
Harp nice book you scanned the pages from. I have read it many times and once again I am not even going to try to discuss points with you since it is a waste of time. And it usually ends up with the moderators getting involved.
Steve
Yes, anybody that is privileged enough to find a copy of this book anywhere for sale or to read, u should jump on it FAST. It is great to read and follow it and grow birds out in the same fashion,as our ancestors did. A lot of the stuff we can't reproduce, with costs in mind but most of it is very useful. When you are doing it seems so simple and easy. Makes a person think long and hard why we are in the food crisis we are in today ????
Steve I would have to say we don't have discussions, but more debates LOL. But in others eyes it is a great learning tool and they can get alot of useful information out of our little differences. (most of the time)
They have the choices to do instead of just one way and only one way of doing things.
I would have to say that our biggest problem is that we both are wolves instead of sheep.
as we both are not afraid to step in and put another's ways or ideas to a test to see if it is viable or not. Again why debates are great and they teach them in schools.
We clearly have two different reasons and motives in why we raise poultry. Of course we both don't want to loose money. You do it in a way of breeding, sales of eggs and poults and I do it by the means of raising quality foods for others and offer the excess of eggs and poults for sale to others to join in on the quality food train. That should not make enemy's but only two people stronger in knowledge. And an understanding of others in the world.
Moderators only step in when the bashing starts.
That is what this site is all about. Information and different peoples ideas on a certain subject. People new to the poultry to learn & others that have had poultry and looking to learn new ways or to share their ways/ideas. That is why their is SOOOO many new members daily. As their is a life time worth of knowledge at their fingertips.
On another note...
Today we had visitors to the farm and they where amazed at the size of our turkeys. They reported that they just butchered a couple toms 8 months old (from bad genetic stock, won't mention where they came from) and when they where all dressed out they weighed in at 10lbs dressed. All that time and money for a dinky little bird ?? I felt sooo bad for these poor people just trying to put quality food on their table and they had to spend over 8 dollars a pound for that turkey they just ate. SAD !!! I offered them poults from our stock that we where going to raise our selves to them at 6 dollars each, with the guarantee that if they did not grow out to a good size this year and they where not happy with them after 24-28 weeks, growing them the way we do, that I would refund all their money for the poults and Plus I would pay for all the feed that they purchased for them.
This year we have also set up a livestock food co-op in our area. Since I already buy in bulk why not pass the savings on ?? Their is soooo many people that want to raise their own meat or eggs, but can not afford the feed stores high prices. So what we have done is we will sell a small amounts of our feed to our customers at our cost, make absolutely no money on it. This is our little way of helping our local community out. Everybody should be able to eat quality foods and not have to pay ridiculous prices for it. That is why we offer our heritage turkeys at 3 dollars a pound, not 6-10 dollars a pound. We still are around and we are not rich by no means but we do make just enough to stay alive and do it again next year.
