Our first turkey started hatching yesterday afternoon, he's the first out of six fertile eggs to begin hatching. My husband helped him out a little bit, enough that he could at least breath as he progresses. However, it has been almost 24 hours and it doesn't seem to have made any progress. It's still alive and moving but it hasn't changed its position or broke through the egg anymore since yesterday. Is he ok or do they usually take a while to fully make it out of the egg? Should we intervene at this point or continue to wait?

I don't have turkeys, but I know that they usually take a little longer to break out of the egg than chickens. I'd give him a few more hours and if his position hasn't changed then try to break in enough to see if he has absorbed the yolk through his body. If it still looks like the yolk is receding into his body, then give him some more time. If there is a small yolk spot with blood, then, unfortunately the chick has a hernia and will not survive.:( But, even so, if he's still moving with that, there may still be hope. Hope this helps!!! -Rachel

Based on your photograph, it is shrink wrapped and will not be able to hatch without assistance. See Sally Sunshine's Assisted Hatching Guide for help.

He's doin good now, we got him out and he's moving and cheaping. Now I need to figure out the best way to get him to eat and drink? I kept hearing people say that Turkeys aren't too bright and won't eat or drink like they should without some sort of assistance. I dont know how true that is, but he's been out for almost 12 hours now and he doesn't seem to be eating or drinking anything...

While they are still absorbing the yolk they can go up to 3 days without eating or drinking. Raising a single poult by itself can be difficult but in large groups they pick up the eating and drinking very quickly on their own.

I dip the poult's beak in the water as an aid to getting it to drink. In addition to providing feed in a feeder, I also sprinkle feed on the floor of the brooder.

Good luck.
