I was thinking about finding a plastic barrel and cutting the ends off about 6-8" to use on the ground to make nest for my bourbon reds. Would fill the bottom with a good layer of shavings and top off with straw. Thought this might keep the eggs from getting wet in the event of a down pour which can seep into the run if heavy enough rain. Would this work or do I need to rethink the nest idea?
Your idea would definitely work!

This is what I use for my geese to go in and lay. This was made out of a 55 gallon plastic barrel. I place a towel on the floor and place hay on top of the towel for a soft bottom so that the eggs don't crack. I have this setup inside my fenced chicken yard. We don't have predators, so I don't have to worry about anything getting in to kill the animals. It's not pretty but it is functional. It works. I put tin on top to overlay so the rain does not get in to get the eggs wet.
