turkey question are they still safe to eat

hey kuntrygirl every thing is fine over here but thanks for thinking about me your sweet
i guess you were asking about the weather lol
i didnt get any tornados here but i did get  alot of hard bone chilling rain i mean a bunch of it and very cold rain
i seen a few snow flaks butnot enough to get excited over i sure do miss snow
here in alabama the part where i live we get snow it seems like every other year and when we get it it only stays on the ground for a few days then its gone
i deside to give the meds a chance its been a week with them on it and not much had changed thier head swells then goes down then swell again the one i think is a tom is the one that has it the most the other one is doing fine but i will not put her with my flock till im sure she is over the worst of it

i thank every one that has helped me out on these two turkeys
it nice to know that there are still folks in this world that cares enough to try and lend a helping hand

Glad to hear that everything is fine. And the turkeys are ok?

How many MG of the meds are you giving them? If it's not too much to ask, what is your daily routine of care and meds with them? I'm curious to see if there is something that we may be missing that we can suggest that you do.

the vet gave me a small spoon and told me to give them a leval spoon full in there quart bottle waterer

my daily routin is i will clean the nasel hole so the gunk will drain and i will massage the sinus under the eye to loosen the stuff up
then i will whip thier eyes and bath there head with witch hasel someone told me that would help
you have any suggestions im all ears

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, and here we go and her perhaps lies the problem. If it were me (and this is just my opinion), I would not and I do not put any meds in my bird's water. I drench them with the meds. In my thinking, the meds are diluted when you put it in water and the strength weakens.

Vets don't think like we bird owners do. They are not thinking that if a bird is sick, he/she will not drink or will not drink as much of the so called "medicated water". So if a bird can't drink, then what is a bird owner to do? Wait for the bird to drink or wait for it to die? No. We drench the bird and get the meds in the bird's system ASAP. Not sure if you mentioned the med that you are giving. What is the name of the med? Let's take a look at that and get a weight on the bird and let's talk you through drawing up the meds in a syringe (without a needle) and getting the meds down the bird's throat. Let's talk about how often as well.

You are doing a great job with your daily routine with your turkey. Keep up the good work.

the meds they gave me well i bought it is tetroxy hca -280 my turkeys weight is around 5 pounds i will check the weight this afternoon
they both are drinking it all because i will hold thier water back at nights so it does not freeze and burst the waterer so as quick as i get it to theme that drink almost all of it
but yes i agree with you 100% about when you put it in water it weaken the meds down but you know when you have somthing thats sick you try to do what the doc said but alot of the time they will give you meds that will not fix the problem so you will come back and spend more money
i hope me saying that does not upset any of the good vets on this site but the one that i have here is from another country
and he is not a avery vet
the vet i used to help me keep my hunting falcons and hawk heathy when i was a master falconer past away and this guy took his place

as far as knowing how to give the meds to a bird without drownding it i can do that
i use a syringe and a cathater this is the way i would give sick falcons and hawks that way and feed them when they are to weak to eat

Ok, I wasn't familiar with that med, so I looked it up and read on it.

Turkeys
Control of hexamitiasis caused by Hexamita meleagridis, susceptible to oxytetracycline.
Control of infectious synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae, susceptible to oxytetracycline.
GROWING TURKEYS - Control of complicating bacterial organisms associated with bluecomb (transmissible enteritis, coronaviral enteritis), susceptible to oxytetracycline.

Chickens
Control of infectious synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae, susceptible to oxytetracycline.
Control of chronic respiratory disease (CRD) and air sac infections caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Escherichia coli, susceptible to oxytetracycline.
Control of fowl cholera caused by Pasteurella multocida, susceptible to oxytetracycline.

And I totally agree with you when you have a sick bird, you want to do what the experts (DOC) suggests. Being as though he is not an avian vet, he is probably just researching what he think it is and offering you advice help but you can get that same help here. When my peafowl was sick, I called around to the vets that were NOT avian vets and they wanted to see my pea but had no experience . I was like, "HUH"! I was not about to spend $300.00 on an office visit for them to experiment on my pea and guess what was wrong when I could come to BYC and get suggestions for people on BYC who know WAY MORE than these vets. And believe me the experienced people on the pea thread is unbelievably remarkable. I would pay the BYC pea people for advice before I would pay some of the vets that I talked to.

Did you call the vet back to let him know that the meds are not working? If not, I would try calling him and letting him know. Perhaps he can suggest another med. Let's try this and see what he says. Depending on what he says, we need to take another step to getting this bird well.

i called the vet and he said it should have cleared it up but if its not working he said i might need to put them down
i dont trust him i asked him about tylan and he told me that that would not help that the tetroxy is the best stuff he would give and that if its head is still swelling that its not worth keeping it a live
like i said i am going to keep them and use what some some old timers around here is telling me and see what happens
as long as they are eating good and drinking good and are showing no sign of suffering i will keep working on them

well i had to put one of them down today the other one is still hanging in there and i may end up putting this one down too but i wil give him the benefit of doubt and give hime a chance to live and make him a pet not a breeder but a pet i don keep pet turkeys but i think im getting mellow in my old age lol

Awwwwwww, I'm so sorry to hear that. I was pulling for your turkey. With the information that you gave me about treatment as suggested by your vet, I was worried. But as you said, you have to listen to the "professionals".

Is the other one still alive?

In the future, if something like this happens again, please post ASAP or PM me. I will give you detailed instructions on what to do. In the meantime, I would love to discuss with you having Tylan on hand. It is not expensive and can be purchased at your local feed store. I don't want you to have to lose all of your turkeys and not be able to have any for your freezer.

Let's focus on the turkey that is still alive and see if we can keep it alive.

Sorry again about losing the other turkey. Sometimes the vets don't have all the answers but BYC members comes close to it. :/
