Turkey with eye injury with pic update 1-12-09

My tom turkeys eye is a bloody mess!

How do I clean it out.

What do I use to do the cleaning.

What med if any should I use on him.

Have pic will upload in a min.


Please any info will help..

Took Gabby to the vet and he has lost his eye on meds and weights in at 14pd at 11mo old

Hi, I don't know much about turkeys, but I would wash it out with a "normal saline" solution, which should be gentle enough not to cause problems. Mix 1/4 teaspoon table salt to 1 cup water. What happen? Poor baby! You can use saline solution as described above. But first to remove some of the blood and crud use a warm wash cloth to clean GENTLY around the eye. You might want to use some terramycin ointment. But cant say until its cleaned out and know what happeened.

Thank you for the info.I have cleaned out his eye and the eyeball part looks like raw meat but he does not have any wounds on him any where so i think he might have done it to his self.I am taking him to my vet in the morning to have the doc look at it and tell me what to do.

I have a young turkey in the house right now with the same problem. only his eye is just swollen shut and the top of his head is bloodied.

we suspect that the old Tom got too amorous.. He is officially kicked out of the pen..

the vet is going to tell you to do what people have already mentioned..

we soaked his eye with collidal silver..(sp) I would like to put a salve on it, but I do not think vasaline is the right kind??

He will be ok in about 3 days with lots of rest..
