Can turkeys live in the same coop with chickens!??
( it's a medium to larger coop)
I seem to get into trouble here with this response but here goes. I always have. I raised 2 poults with a couple dozen hens and 2 roos. They were over a year old and it became mating season for the turkeys. My female turkey started going in the where the chickens were dusting and stomping them. Then I separated them. There is something called Blackhead that is fatal to turkeys. I called my agriculture department in our county offices to inquire about it. It's something in the soil and at this time my area is unaffected. Doesn't mean it will stay that way.
As far as room, my hen would really peck anyone that would roost very close to her. Be sure you have adequate room for roosting and depending how large the turkeys get, they can break legs trying to jump down. Sorry my response isn't really helpful. sue

I think you can also call your state agricultural office and ask if there are reported cases of blackhead in your area. As with all diseases it is supposed to be reported if your birds show symptoms so the state can keep track of everything. So a phone call may help, or you may be able to find a list of reported deseases in your state on their website.

We thankfully dont have it in my area and while my turkeys and chickens arent housed together they free range together just fine.

Im so excited Both my turkey hens are laying eggs now. I got two eggs in the nest today

I'm told it is in the soil. Try googling turkeys and Blackhead. sue

Excuse me if I am wrong but I believe what redneck farmer is saying is that he is not keeping his poultry on soil but rather his poultry "live on DE like stuff" and is asking if blackhead will be a problem if he adds turkeys to his coop since his poultry are not being raised on the dirt.

I don't know the answer to that and would recommend that redneck farmer contact his local county conservation agent (at least that is what they are called where I live).

That is exactly what I mean!

You wont be able to tell sex for quite some time. usually by 3 months old youll have a good idea. And the bump on its head is called a snood. All turkeys have one. If it is a female itll stay relatively small itll grow a little larger and if it is a male it will grow wider and longer as he ages. He will be able to elongate and retract the snood females cant.
