My poults are doing great! Be glad when the sun is warm enough to take them out here its finally made the 40 degree mark
I love the faces of the babies when they get the first trip outside!

So we have eatten our own home grown turkeys before, BBWs that we had processed at a local farm.

WELL.......

We bit the bullet and just tonight processed one of our own Bourbon Red tom. Boy We were nervous but all went well. We didnt do the prettiest job dressing him but he looks pretty good. He will sit and wait in the fridge for the next 4 days til he can join us for Easter dinner. I will probably brine hime for 12rs before cooking.
Remember, heritage turkeys are self basting, so instead of adding any water to the pan to baste, you will probably need to take some out occasionally.

Enjoy and hope you will let us know how it want on Monday?
My Daughter pulled some Turkey out of the freezer part of a Red Bourbon Tom that I brine for about 12 to 14 hours and then smoked it on the grill and it was as good or better than when I cooked it and the moister stayed in the meat.
There is no comparison between a store bought bird and a home grown one.

7am this morning I got a call that my Eggs that Celie had sent me has come in Thanks again Celie.
I will be putting 48 eggs in the Incubator tomorrow.
Frank, you are more than welcome! I hope you get a super hatch and we want pictures when they hatch. The white poults will be the Holland Whites! LOL

Bad news. The jake busted out of his pen Hulk style and crushed every egg the hen was setting.

Its early in the year. Do you think she will build another clutch if I let them run together again??

How can I tell if the bronzes I have are standard or the BBB. The sign said Bronze, and I presumed they were BBB

Last year I had some Heritage Standard Bronze next to some BBB and the only difference we saw was that the BBB legs were double the thickness and grew twice as fast seeing that they would only eat out of the feeder. Where the HSB were more friendly and loved to forage in the hay field.

Universal Egg Turners

Has any one here ever bought a Universal egg Turner and found out it was not as Universal as they thought it would be
hu.gif

I bought a new Incubator and it has all the bells and whistles as well as a Universal Egg Turner and it does have good size cups for the eggs to set in.
Celie Sent me some Belgian White Turkey Eggs that looks like Godzilla layed them capered to my first year lay Bourbon Reds eggs.
I got them to fit by arranging them along side of the smaller eggs.
I don't know if I were to buy some goose egg trays if they would work with this style of egg turner or not.

And I am not going back to hand turning again talk about a pain.
Anyone have any suggestions.

I've never had luck with the goose egg turners, the eggs were so heavy that the motor did not have enough uummp to pull the eggs back once the went all the way forward. Could be my hova bator turner.
