Turkeys For 2013

Here's my latest hatch of poults (still in the hatcher in this pic, they are in the brooder now)... 25 poults out of 26 eggs. The little guy in the cup had a rough hatch, and needed help... after he finally climbed out of his shell he had a pretty wet/rough navel, so I put him in the cup for a while to keep the other's from pecking at it while he dried and fluffed. Seems fine today, navel dried up and nobody's bothering/pecking at it. This time I banded the legs of the RioXEastern poults, so I can easily tell them apart from the Narris if I decide to sell some of these guys young.

The yellow downed poult in the front on the right has an extra red tinted head, and a much darker stripe down its back than the others that I've hatched. Only one hatched out pure yellow this time. Can't wait to see how all these little yellow poults feather out... gonna be a long wait tho, lol.

This makes 45 poults in my brooder so far.. yikes, lol. There's 58 or 59 more eggs cooking in the Dickey still too... and I'm still collecting 2-3 eggs a day from my 4 girls, lol. At least I'm hatching enough that I'll be able to keep quite a few, sell quite a few and process quite a few... and not get too attached to every single one. Sure wish a Blue Slate or 2 would pop up tho.

Anyone have any tried and true tips for breaking a stubbornly determined broody Turkey Hen so she goes back to laying eggs? I've caged her in a wire cage twice now for 4-5 days at a time to no avail (she just wrecks her tail feathers and scuffs up her little snood pacing the cage). So we're going on almost 2 weeks of being broody. As soon as I decide to let her out of the cage, I let them all out to free range but at feeding/coop-up time in the PM she finds a spot to settle into by dark, then has hoarded a few Guinea eggs and pulled them under her by 9AM the next morning. Even if I get out there early and grab the first few eggs the Guineas lay she's still in her spot pretending she's on eggs, lol. She is driving me nutty

I'd really like some more eggs from her, she eats like a horse so a little more return from her this season would be nice

Broodies-- I don't have any hens that are broody, but I have given up try to break a chicken broody. You might have enough eggs with out her contribution!!! You bator is FULLLLL. lol

Bummer, I guess she's going to stay broody then... until she starts trying to take my arm off when I need to collect my Guinea eggs, lol. Then it's ON. All eggs are MINE, period lol.

I had several of her eggs marked in this last hatch (I didn't catch her laying each time tho), and at least 3 of these yellow downed poults came from her eggs... so thats one of the main reasons I want more eggs from her, lol. My 'bator isn't full enough, lol. There's room for 20-30 more Turkey eggs in the Dickey right now, then next week when I pull out next week's batch that'll need to go into lockdown there will be a TON of room! (And I still have 2 Hovabators that I can drag back out and use if I need to, lol).
More eggs more eggs I need more eggs

(Spoken like a true hatch-o-holic huh? lol).

Here's the 6 little yellow cuties that just hatched in this batch...

And 3 from 2 previous hatches.

I'm still miffed why these light colored poults are showing up in the hatches from dark parents, but I'm perfectly fine with it, lol. Just wish I knew what they were, and how they will look when mature/fully feathered out.

kuntrygirl are your BR girls still laying? If so, you aren't eating those eggs are you???

And you're miffed? You should see my reaction when a light colored poult hatches. Now, I will admit they are BEAUTIFUL when they mature but I'm so accustomed to seeing the dark reds. :/

All of my girls have gone broody except 1. I only get 1 egg a day. :hit I have 3 hens setting on 1 nest and 4 girls setting on another nest and 2 girls setting on another nest and 3 girls sitting on separate nests. I'm confused. :/ :idunno

I finally got my Porter turkey order that I ordered 9 months ago! I wanted to share some photos. Got 26 new poults, just one casualty. Sorry if some are a little fuzzy, it was hard to focus indoors on moving targets!

Self Blue:

He must have been having a time hatching Pencilled Palms. I ordered 6, got 2. Got 2 Pencilled Red Palms (my requested substitution), still not enough, so he sent 2 Penicilled Chocolate Palms. So now I have 2 each of 3 colors of pencilled palms. Guess I will just have to wait to see what sexes I get to determine what the breeding plan is! I hatched some of my own poults to coincide with this order, so I added them in to the brooding bin so they all will get raised together. It is quite the variety since I hatched Slates, Self Blues, Mottled Black, and Royal Palm.

They are beautiful poults! I can hardly wait for mine to be old enough to breed!
