What is a good age to process a Narragansett turkey? Mine will be 8 months old next month and I would like to process one for thanksgiving. Do you think it will be close to 35-40#'s?

ONE of my goals is to stay strong into my older years. ANd having animals I can manage is key. HOrses are on their way out, and poultry is in.

My grandfather lived well into his 90's , lived alone, drove a car, and then one day tripped and fell while carrying in a new TV. His sister lived the longest, to 105.

IMO working on our small farm keeps me physically active and mentally active. IT is sitting at the old slow PC that negatively impacts my body-- it gets stiff quickly. Dang, I must be getting older. WHere is Jack Lalane?? I need limbering exercises too, not just strength when carrying a tom that needs to be moved from his perch to his coop for lock up.

VIva la turkeys.

I wish you a long life will into your 90-100's! I try to stay active in tending all our animals also.
My family did not live long lives but hopefully our or the next generation will help change that.
Jack Lalane is not around any longer but there are others that do excersizing on tv every day. lol
I have a tread mill but I hate it! lol

Quote: I hate a tread mill too-- rather chase turkeys and chickens!!

Yes, Jack Lalane is gone, but I remember his shows from the '60's and he was very practical-- using common house hold items like a ladderback straight chair and a mop. Do any of us have mops anymore??lol

Yes, our generation can change the future. Dump all the junk food, ALL, and eat real meat and vegies. Love eating turkey all year long.

Probably not, since most hatcheries list 33 to 35 #s for max weight for toms of that breed and that is live weight at 18 months, give or take! You will lose 20% weight in processing compared to live weight? At 18 months and 35#s after processing would be about 28 pounds ! I had mature Hollands last year at 18 months process out at 34 and 35 pounds, but they are the largest heritage breed in the US, that I know of.

Sorry, but you might get 20 pounder! weight it live now on your bathroom scale and take at least 10% off that for a more realistic idea!
