Turkeys For 2013

Ok, here are pics of the first turkeys that I hatched this year. This is a pic of the turkey eggs (hatched poults) that I had refrigerated and then put in the incubator.

As of today they 15 weeks and 2 days old. They keep me laughing when I go outside and I have fruit and veggies to throw to the birds and they are a ways away from me and they see the food, they take out flying through the air. They are getting up to flying about 7 feet off of the ground. I have to duck down when I see them flying towards me because I"m afraid they will fly into me. It is soooo funny to see them charging at me.

I will try to take a pic of them flying in the air if I can.

beeeeeeautiful birds!!!! I love the color.

Sorry to hear about that but he is absolutely BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Can you re-home him or is he too dangerous to give someone else that problem of him doing the same thing to them? :/

I don't know.  This started a week ago and I said that I was just going to be sure that I kept the girls out of the chicken/turkey pen.  Chuck is too large to fly over.  But when I ran inside for something last week end and I came out, Kayla was in the pen.  3 other people weren't watching  who were supposed to be.  What if someone else says the same and a little one gets a flogging.  It was traumatic for me. I'm not trying to make this bigger than what it is but.....I don't want to see someone else get hurt plus we'll eat him, if he'll fit in the stove.  lol

I don't know if he would stay aggressive but I won't take any chances with the kids.  If it were just me I'd deal with it bit I'm not sure about the rest of your kids or grandkids but if I tell mine not to do something, you can pretty much bet they will..

You are right. I totally understand. I had the same problem with my 1st ram many years ago. I couldn't re-home him because he had already head butted someone and I didn't want to see him kill the next person, so I had to take him to the butcher. I cried all the way there and back and while I was putting the meat in the freezer. :hit

So, I totally agree with you. You have to do what's best for you. Even if it's just you, you don't want to always be on the defense when going in your yard. That's how I was for a while with my ram. I couldn't trust him, so he had to go. And then again, home grown turkey is sooooooo good. :drool

One of my newest poults has been injured

I have a large hutch with a divider in the middle, with 2 broody hens on each side. The other broody hen hasn't hatched her chicks yet. Apparently, a part of the divider got flipped up, and one of the poults got its let stuck underneath, and the broody hen on the other side attacked it's foot thinking something was trying to get to her nest. Anyway, the poor poult's whole 'drumstick' area, is skinned down to the muscle, and the other foot is pretty bruised. It was chilled and pretty much lifeless when I found it. I grabbed it and tucked it under my shirt against my skin to heat it up while I put together something to put it in. It perked up, began cheeping, and opened its eyes and lifted its head up after awhile. I washed his leg and put neosporin on it, and gave him some sugar water with a dropper, which he accepted, and now I have him in a little towel 'cave' with a heating blanket in an aquarium in the house. He's sleeping now, and I don't know if he'll make it, but I've done what I can. Hope he pulls through

Good he's drinking... Keep applying Neosporin an its ok if he sleeps that means he's coming out of shock... Was there blood was it bleeding? That would be the only reason for death is blood loss, or maybe Infecton but u put neosporin on it so the infection wot be a big deal as long as you keep applying it. Good luck :) ;)

I ferment the bulk of my poultry feeds and grains for my flocks, so that helps lower my feed costs, but it is a lot of extra work. Too much some days, but I keep at it because they consume at least 1/3 less feed and they get a lot more nutrition out of what they are eating rather than just eating the dry feeds.

Hey you should join us over in the Fermented Feeds for meaties thread. Its really not only for meaties of course, guess that is just where we got started. It does make the whole cornishX thing more bearable of of course.
My feed store even asked if I got rid of some of my chickens, cause I wasn't using as much feed. The down side as you said is that it can be pretty tome consuming when you have a large flock. You might pick up a few things to help with time management over there. We really put our heads together.

THis is somethng I am interested in . I have just started with cornishX and yesterday mixed their first batch of ff. Not sure if I am doing it right yet.

I cup crumbles, 1T braggs, and cover with water. At 24 hours it hasn't done anything, but I feed it out anyways.

Maybe I need to think bigger-- make up a gallon, and pull off a cup at a time.

Suggestions??

I do FF for over 150 birds, I started on a 1 gallon bucket. Make it work for your needs, Its such a huge plus. Less odor, saves $ and the birds do very well on it. Let it ferment 2-3 days till u get the bubbles. Heres mine:

This was corn, but pellet or crumble will do it too.

Forgot to add when beekissed left, i stopped following the thread too. I loved her writing style
