Well I made a deal with my son who absolutely loves the turkey. Told him to pick our any heritage turkey he would like but Turkey Turkey (that's his name lol) was going to provide us with a great meal and we would honor him and give thanks to him . Went over somewhat well and he's picked out a narragansett. I read up on them and they seem to be a good choice, now to find some lol.

My turkeys are real pets, its true. They follow me around. They'll eat from our hands. Sweet gentle giants, for the most part.

Welcome to the forum!! I have 4 Narragansetts. I have had them since they were 2 days old. They are now going on 6 months old. They are the silliest, most fun creatures to have around. I bought mine strictly for pets. I would rather starve than eat mine My house front and back is entirely windows with a wrap around deck. They spend a good part of their day walking around and around the house, staring in the windows waiting for me to come out. When I do come outside, I am promptly greeted with all 3 of my Toms gobbling in delight. They never leave my side when I am outside, even though they have 30 chickens and ducks to run around with. I don't even think of them as poultry. They are just like dogs. I even think they would attack someone if they tried to hurt me. But they will not let me hold any of my chickens. They are extremely jealous of me showing any attention to anyone but them and will chase a chicken all the way around the house to keep them away from me.

I'm new to poultry and have 5 Silkies which I've really enjoyed. I'd now like to try a turkey or two so here are my questions:
Would I need to get 2 babies as companions (I plan to hand raise and handle often since I want a pet) or would one be ok alone?
If I get 2 would they fight when older (I want males)?
Can I put the baby(s) in with my 6 mo. old Silkies? If not then how old before they can be with my chickens?
Do I put these turkeys under a heat lamp and raise them the same as I did the Silkies?

I love my turkeys!!! They are so entertaining.. In my experience and opinion more than one would be best. A tom and a hen. Two toms will battle it out often, the only way I have found to soothe the chaos is free ranging with my chickens. I raised my turkeys with my chickens from day one. Some people warn against this because there are many diseases your turkeys can get from your chickens. Check to see if black head is a problem in your area. I dont have this prob here and since I was going to free range anyway I bought medications just in case. You will need to keep them warm as you did the chickens if you are getting hatchlings you really should check out a book called Storeys guide to raising turkeys, turkey can be alittle more complicated than chickens so more info the better. Once they are out of the brooder it is a piece of cake, same routine as your chickens. Good luck my friend, if you have any more questions I would be happy to help..

I'm still looking for narragansetts, chicks adults or eggs, but I can't seem to find anti in the affordable range when I do find them anyone with any suggestions

I too havent been able to find any. Everyone is done with turkeys this time of year, you dont get as big of a surplus of eggs from turkey as you do from chickens as they are seasonal layers. You will find it will be better to wait till next spring. what kind of suggestions were you looking for?
