Turning down the heat lamp

Ok so I'm new to all this, I am building my coop next month so I'm getting my chicks soon. I have been doing a lot of research and I know you need to turn down the heat, starting at 95, 5 degrees each week. So my question is.... HOW?? I used to have snakes and lizards so I have had heat lamps, I don't remember them having a thermostat control on them how do I do this??? Please don't laugh at me I am CLUELESS! LOL

It's how close the lamp is to the chicks. Raise the lamp to lower the temp.

So I definitely need a thermometer in the box with them! Thank you

Yes, you do need a thermometer. Also, the chicks will tell you if they are comfortable. If they are cold, they will huddle under the lamp in a big pile. If they are too hot they will find a spot in the brooder away from the lamp. If they seem to be spread evenly under the lamp the temp is good for them.
