Ive got a Silkie roo and Im pleased as well as bummed. He’s not loud enough to hopefully not bother my neighbors and only crows for a solid six minutes at six am. He the sweetest boy and hasn’t hurt any of my girls (that’s understandable since I’ve got some bigger hens) but he’s also been playing mom to one of my polish babies who I got with him at two weeks old when he was two months)
I just want to know, about his appearance, possible future temperament, and the possibility of a cross with any of my hens.

He’s around 7 months, but he looks nothing close to as mature as my last rooster did by 5 months. I’m not worried, just curious if Silkie nature later on? Or if he’s just a slow grower.

As for crossing him with my girls, I think the most improbable are the two Brahmas as he’s probably my third or fourth smallest of my little flock. I’ve got two polish girls, a partridge bantam Cochin, and a seabright. My last two girls have stopped laying a while ago.

Last with the temperament, I know that silkies are supposed to be one of the most docile chook breeds, but how are the roosters?

Thank you!

Most people hate the roosters crow, unless you especially want him to crow.... i think thats a positive about him.. he sounds amazing :love
He really is, he’s a fairly quiet boy since he just started crowing, but when my polish rooster started crowing, even when he barley knew how, he did it all day long till after dark. I loved his crow so much, but my neighbors sure didn’t. I’m just hoping we get lucky with my Silkie boy and he keeps his six minute six am schedule.

Outta the 4 silkie roos I have had, they were all docile and submissive. Not aggressive at all. The one I still have is very.... uhh... proud, I guess I should say. I have to keep him separate from the other roosters cuz he thinks he is much bigger than those two. He still the sweetest little thing though. ;)

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I wouldn't personally cross those breeds, but each to their own. I'm sure they will still be cute. ;)

I think that white is a dominant color. Which in theory would give you white chicks. But I'm still learning the whole dominant gene thing. It's pretty interesting.
If my neighbors argued about my roosters crowing I'd.... well... ENCOURAGE THEM TOCROW LOUDER!! Or I just wwouldn't listen to them ;)
Not here... I really appreciate having good relationships with my neighbors. :old

Anybody who crows non stop has got to go. :smack Love to hear a standard amount though. My boys start up around 3:30 am but luckily the neighbors are far enough away it's no issue. :)

All my chooks, including Silkie boys are individuals. Some mature later, others have started trying to mate by 8 weeks. Some are giant jerks, while others are perfect gentlemen... Which does not mean sits in my lap and get coddled, but rather when I approach allow me to handle and not try to peck me or face of. One of my boys turns his back side to me so I pick him up the way he prefers and he's good to the ladies as well.
