Turns out I love them more than I thought!

I'm putting in a plug for the Invisible Fence company; good products, good service, and in business a long time. More expensive than do-it-yourself, but more 'zing' is available in their collars, and sometimes it's just worth it.

Thanks Mary. I know I need them!

We first got it in 1992, and had very good results, with seven dogs over the years. Then, dog #8, an adult from a shelter, decided that no collar was going to keep him from our chickens. He was one tough cookie!!!
We then added a 5' woven wire fence, with electric tape on top, and the IF hitting about 3' inside the physical barrier. Ft. Knox for dogs! It worked beautifully, for him, and three more rescue pit bull terriers, until this spring, when that old 'motherboard', or whatever it's called, finally failed, and our younger dog dug under the fence and killed many of our chickens. Awful!!!
IF replaced the main board, both collars, and several batteries, with apologies. it didn't replace our nice birds, but they came through for us.
Our current dogs, including the young killer beast, would be fine with only the IF. One yahoo out of 12 is good!

I seem to remember that the invisible fence cautioned that it doesn't work well with certain breeds - many giant breeds (like the OP's Newfies) and particular individual breeds.
That may have changed since I looked into invisible fence years ago. Make sure you read the instructions carefully before counting on it as a deterrent.

I too recommend Invisible Fence.

Definitely a consideration. For us it worked on our goldens, but Newfies have an even thicker coat. Perhaps they have collars adapted for long haired dogs ? Worth checking out.
