Twilight is an Easter Egger. She is almost 5 years old (yes, I have old chickens ). She is kind of mean to other hens at times but usually is decent. She still lays her beautiful blue eggs every day!

Her beak looks kind of beastly, doesn't it?!

Why is it that some chickens look mean? I have one that looks mean too. I can never figure out if it's the markings or the comb type or what! I figure as long as they lay and they don't draw blood it's ok if they are a bit bossy.

My red sex link always looked like she had a mean face too until she dropped down to bottom of the pecking order. Their face usually reddens when attacking or fighting with an other chicken.

Twilight is around the top of the pecking order, so that may be why she looks so mean.

That's interesting... my husband always referred to the mean looking one as the one that looks like a hawk too. Perhaps certain birds/breeds just have more hawk-like appearances that we associate with a tougher temperament.
