I always incubate my double yolkers (I keep quail not chickens), and only one hatched and it was recent. I got one chick and one gross blob of red goo. I didn’t see it hatch, I had put it in with a couple special marked eggs all separated from the normies by having a strawberry carton upside down over them, and I woke up on hatch day and had 3 chicks and a blob of goo, with 3 empty shells, no idea who was who, but clearly only one came out of the double. They had both been wiggling at day 9, at lockdown it was just a dark egg with some visible veins and maybe movement visible in the air cell. I couldn’t differentiate two any more like I could at the earlier candling. It looked like the chicks had been pecking the goo, and they all had it on them 🤢. It definitely wasn’t yolk sac, it was far more solid. The 3 chicks who could have been the twin all grew normally and had no issues, and I think I was super lucky that one twin made it.

:sick Yes, that's a very lucky baby! Normally when the twin quits early the other chick doesn't make it because of bacteria. That was a little miracle quail!

Do not name it nugget. There's a conspiracy theory here on BYC that the name NUGGET is cursed and chicks become mean and aggressive roosters!
Yikes! I have a mean rooster named Puffy Britches Jack (PBJ). My two boss hens don't tolerate his shenanigans and take great joy in pushing him around😂

Well, while we're waiting, does anyone have name ideas for the other chick that hatched already?
I usually don't name mine til I know they are pullets or cockerels, and even then I wait until I can ID a personality trait that helps me choose a suitable name. When they get older and they don't have a distinguishable personality, I go for physical features. I'm lame. In my flock currently we have: Poppy, Spunk, Indy (for Independent), Burrito (I've had to wrap her in a blanket), Klaus, Buffy, Red, Blue, Gertie, Penelope, Bellatrix, Narcissa, Squash (shell was squashed a day before her hatch!), Peaches (EE with puffy cheeks), Betty Boop (RIP), No Name, Scratch (scratched an open wound making it worse), and I have 6 cockerels that are named Stew Pot, four pullets unnamed, two leghorns and two barred rocks also unnamed.

lol, One of my very first chickens was named Nugget and she used to fly up to my shoulder and hang out while I did chicken chores. She's the reason I couldn't go out to the chicken run without putting my hair up first. 😅
