Two chickens, two problems: respiratory and foot problem

The purpose of the oil is to smother the mites. So... you can spend the money on a special product, or you can use what you have. Even a dollop of Crisco smeared over the scales will do the job. Some folks recommend a good soak in Epsom Salt first, followed by the oil. But, really, a couple of treatments of oil will eventually do the job.

I've never had scaly leg mites in my flock (since starting back with chickens 5+ years ago.) So, have not treated. But, my friend @Beekissed does a prophylactic treatment every fall.

I do agree that looks like a bad case of scaly leg mites. Pododermatitis could be adding to it. Soaking the feet once a week in warm soapy water, gently brushing the scales with a toothbrush. Dry the legs, and use your favorite oil rubbed deeply into scales weekly for several weeks. I like Crisco in the can, but castor oil, vaseline, coconut oil, veg oil are all fine. Treatment of the coop, nests, and roosts with permethrin 10 spray after emptying bedding would really help to control leg mites. Keep coop bedding stirred daily, dry, and add new bedding when needed.
