two coyotes this morning chased my dogs....

I live in South East Louisiana we are now being over run w coyotes. All the devasted areas from Katrina are turning in to breeding grounds for them. I have heard horror stories about coydogs from hunters in this area. My family home is(was) on the little tip of land that surrounds lake Ponchtrain by the Missisippi State line. The people still living their are loosing pets ect. They are traveling in to subdivisions in the city of Slidell and anywhere there is food. This really frightens me. I know the coyotes are breeding w stray dogs. I was in to Search and Rescue(mid 90's) and one of the biggest reasons I quite was cause of the coyote/dogs. I am not sure about La, but Ms has bounty on them. Its really getting bad. Also found a coyote in a school farther south during open hours. I have been in a situtation w wild dogs and they attack, have no fear of man. It was one of my last wilderness work outs with my dog. La has black bears on the endangered list. I live a few miles from the Honey Island swamp area. I can only imagine whats running around hear at night.

I've had to get Cash to leave a bear alone...a MAMA WITH TWO CUBS!

He finally came in the house but I scared me! We also have a lot of cougars around here. He's killed coyotes before and he's smart...

I've seen him chase a "bait" coyote and then stop...from where he was--he couldn't see the pack of 6+ behind the slash pile waiting to kill him...he could probably smell them, though! We probably shoot 1 or 2 per month at our house.

If I could, I'd have at least one more HUGE LGD. Cash turned 4 in July so I'm thinking within the next year or two, we'll get a pup to raise up with him and be his "replacement" when it's time to retire him to the house!

I've heard of bears around here, but not seen any - and I doubt they are very common. Bobcats we have, though, had one pass across the farm this last spring - luckily he was just passing through.

These coyotes are a BIG pack - the alpha male is a huge sucker - must be at least 60 pounds, he might be a coydog - no one can get close enough to him to get a good look or a good shot. My neighbor saw them running the fields one evening - he said he stopped counting at 15.

My other neighbor was plowing this summer to plant tobacco (right across the road from me) and he found where they had been sleeping - matted down areas with a lot of bones laying around. It's about 1/4 mile to the road - and his property is right across the road, so less than a half mile from me (within sight) they are sleeping

I'm getting really sick of coyotes right about now.

what really ticks me off is that they are faster and smarter than I am

I have a young German GSD who just lost his mentor. He is 19 mths and I am thinking of a LGD to have w him. I work him a night because of the 2 legged predators. He sleeps in my bed room during the day while the fowl gets yard time. A LGD could lounge around the yard all day with me and the flock and do the night with my GSD have the 2 and 4 legged preds, covered.. They are behind a good high secure fence. This is something how you have to think now a days.
