two geese can't walk both within three days

If she won't eat ,I have used canned cat food or you could get some baby food. Carrot or peas or other veggies, would be good for her. Starter foods have niacin in them but if she won't eat. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Noone had brewer's yeast but I found bird vitamins. I gave her some but I fear it may be too late. She took a turn for the worse. I thought she was dead already. She was still when I went to her but then I noticed her eye blinking and shallow breathing. I put some vitamin water on her tongue and she chewed a little at some food but if she survives the night I will be surprised. I'm kind of torn on whether I should put her down or not. I want to give her every chance to live but hate to see her so sick.

Anyway, I also picked up a copy of the book that was recommended so hopefully I can get a better understanding of what is happening and maybe catch this earlier next time. Poor Dolphin. I don't know what I am going to tell my 3 year old. The first goose named dolphin died during hatch and to spare my 3 year old from the pain of loss, I pretended another gosling was the same goose, calling it Dolphin. Now, I am never naming a goose dolphin ever again. My daughter named the original dolphin.

My heart breaks for you hon.

I am no veterinarian. I thought the "keel" was the back end of a goose, but what I've read is that geese are pretty resistant to the kind of organisms that spread in a flock, the kind that can decimate your chicken flock, that is. They usually get hardware disease from eating nails, screws or bits of metal, and this can take weeks to manifest enough that they show illness. Poisoning is another one, but kind of rare in that they don't eat poisonous plants unless they are way beyond hungry. Botulism is caused by feeding near a carcass, and it shows as a sudden paralysis that progresses within hours or a day to death.

So chances are that your flock of geese (and yours too, OP) are not at risk for a plague of some sort. Something environmental is probably the cause, hopefully something you can easily find and fix.

marathonmultiplesmom - I am so so very sorry that you lost Dolphin. I wish I could make the hurt go away but I can't. I never even thought of hardware disease because I have not experienced any issues with my geese. But Kim65 could be right and it may not have been the vitamin deficiency like I had thought. When I read that the legs were not functioning properly that sent up a red flag and made me think of when my rooster was sick and could not walk. Just know that Dolphin is in a better place right now and she is not suffering and you did all that you could to save her.

I would still give the extra vitamins to the others just to be on the safe side and try to find the brewers yeast if at all possible. I had to order mine online but I have since found it locally.

I am so sorry and wish I could come and give you and your a 3 year old hugs but I can't.

I now have a third goose doing the same. This one is not as extreme as the others so maybe I can head this one off. I have liquid bird vitamins (niacin, b vitamins) I found in my fish medicine box and niacin pills in Walmarts vitamin section for the food. I hope I got it in time for the other three. I still need to no how long to do this.

I sure hope you did. Have you given any of the vitamins to the original 2 geese? If you have have you seen any improvement in them? Kin65 pointed out that it could be hardware disease. Read her comment to familiarize with it. I am sorry to hear that it is happening to yet another one. Although it kinda makes me think that it may be the vitamin deficiancy like originaly thought.

wow... with 3 of your geese, OP, I doubt hardware disease would be likely. I read the section on that in David Holderread's book and they have to EAT hardware or string and it has to impact in such a way to make them sick. I would think the probablilty of 3 having that happen would be low but idk for sure. I am definitely following this one. I hope we get it figured out. I'm not sure if your geese and my goose had the same affliction but I am curious to see if this treatment will work this time. I am going to look through my book some more. I;ll let you know if I come across more useful info.

I would guess staph, parasites or nutrition.
