Two out of three Silkie chicks are now dead.

Not sure exactly what happened. There could be a number of factors, but I don't have enough knowledge to make conclusions.

1. The light made about 95 degree temperature, with lower temperature all around it in case they got too hot.
2. They were varying ages, one was a week old (he died 3 days ago, 6 days after puchase), another probably 2 or 3 weeks (he died today, 9 days after purchase), and the eldest (maybe 4 or 5 weeks) seems to be doing great.
3. They had fresh water.
4. The chick starter I formulated myself--it has 17% protein and is finely ground corn, wheat, roasted soybeans, and barley, all 100% organic, non-gmo.
5. The two that died just seemed to lose energy and stopped eating so much, eventually dying.
6. When I bought them a week ago they were started on regular medicated feed, most likely, so of course their feed was switched.
7. They had a fairly large area to run around in, about 2x4 feet. It was fairly clean with pine shaving bedding.

So what the heck happened? It's pretty upsetting that two of them died on me. I read that a lot of chick starter feeds (which aren't medicated) are simply regular rations that are finely ground so that the chicks can eat it. I did not include any calcium additive in the chick's feed, which is only for layers, so please don't assume right away it was the feed just because I made it myself, unless I obviously did it wrong.

And lastly... will the last chick do fine by himself, or do I need to get him a friend or two? He started peeping fairly loudly when his last friend disappeared... he may calm down though.

Thanks for the help in advance.

How sad :(

I wouldn't formulate my own feed. I would feel it was too big of a risk.. Cocci is very much a problem in chicks, and medicated feed is important. They could have contracted that and died..

I am very sorry for your loss. Anything after 48 hours after hatch would be abnormal.. I would look for reasons why it happened. I have only lost one after hatch and I have no idea why. Things like that just happen when they are so young.

Yeah it's upsetting =( I understand chicks can die at a young age, but a 66% death rate is not normal. Not sure what else to say... do chicks need to be in groups, or should I just let the remaining one be by himself?

They do not NEED to be in groups, but it is preferred. For now give him a fluffy stuffed toy and a little mirror.

Just throwing that out there, it isn't a silkie

Looks more like a cochin bantam. Not that it matters.
Oh darn. Oh well, still wouldn't have wanted them to die.

But now I'm wondering about the one that's left... care to take a look at this guy and tell me? He was also sold to me as a Silkie: http://imgur.com/a/ZURlT

Thanks.

You know i would wait a week and then you rguy is stil ok.. clean everything out well.Maybe sterilize with boiling water and then get your guy a friend if he stays ok.

Birds are flock animals and so their behavior isnt loner orientated at all. They count on each other for warnings of preditors warmth etc.Its ingrained so I am sure he is stressed that he is alone.
My Light Orps freak out if if I take the other 2 away from one even for minutes. They travel as a group always they are 8 weeks old.

I agree the medicated feed when tiny is probablysomething needed to protect them even if it is "medication" ..
Afte they are old enough then you can start home made food .Time will most likely clean out the medication if any is residual in their bodies
.Another thought, possibly some of the feed had something lethal to baby chicks that wouldnt be to adults. Babies of all kinds are very sensitive to many things that adults can tolerate.

Did they act sick first and then die?.If not then I also am wondering if they could have choked on some larger grain??Some one told me that chicks can choke easily.but maybe you crushed it all first..
They didnt have sticky butt ?
Just some ideas

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any idea how long it would be advisable to use starter chick only to make them healthy, then switch to another feed? Is 4 weeks enough, for example?

He started peeping really loudly when the last one died, so I know he wanted a companion. If he says alright for another week we'll get another one. Any idea if he's a Silkie or not?

Also, they did act sick before. They didn't have energy and stopped eating so much. I made sure any poop was removed from their bottom if they got stuck. Only one had that problem once but I fixed it quickly. I'm sure that wasn't the problem.

Thanks.
