My Coop
My Coop
I have an 8' x 8' coop right now and it's split down the middle--so each side is 4'w x 8'L I would like to divide it up to house breeding trios, but I'm not sure if I can...or if I'll have the room. It's also 8'H inside.

I was thinking that I could possibly make breeding pens attached to the walls & raised a few feet off the floor to accomdate 6+ breeds of chicken, all housed separately...

So there would be four or five mini coops within the coop, attached to the interior walls. These would be maybe 18" w, 24'' tall & 4' long. Oh those would be for bantams....is that big enough?

Also, if I were to house standards in similar situations--not in elevated pens, but sectioned off portions of the coop, would a few square feet be adequate for a trio? With one nesting box & one roost?

I hope the above makes some sense? I had to draw it out last night for my hubby and I think he does get it...but the main issue now is figuring out runs--the bantams would have a shared run with a series of ramps going down into it--and little doors so I could alternate their "turnout" time...

Does anyone have anything similar to this? I think I remember seeing something very similar a few months ago, but I've been unable to find that thread anywhere. It seems the person may have had silkies???

Thanks!!!

YES that's it! Thanks! But that's not how I remembered it. For some reason, I thought all THREE sections shared a run...hmmm...this still may be able to work because I do have 3 potential spots for additional, mini-runs...

Although, my birds won't be breeding age until NEXT spring or maybe even summer...so it doesn't have to happen right now...and I'm still brainstorming more ideas for getting lights in to the coops, if I move them else where (to the other side of the house). That's the best spot for another coop because we've made a park-like lawn around the other one that hubby absolutely will not destroy to expand the existing coop.
