Two Swollen legs, how to help?

Hi All,

I have a 4 month old Brown Leghorn (Speedy the Evasive) with the metatarsus of both legs swollen, one worse than the other. She eats medicated chick starter, drinks, and follows her friends, but mostly sits--it's obviously painful for her to walk. She lifts her wings the way we might lift our arms/shoulders to somehow ease our weight on an injured leg.

They almost seem fractured, but both at once? She just hobbled out of the coop like this 9 days ago. Her pads look good and aren't swollen. She does feel small and light, but her buddies are a Welsummer and a Cochin, which are bigger breeds anyway.

Could this be a disease? If it's trauma do I leave her locked in the dog crate for a few weeks? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (I do see I need to cut her nails.)

Hi guys! Just wanted to refresh this post. The swelling is increasing rather than getting better. It occurred to me (I guess I'm rather slow) that when she sleeps in the coop her perch is about 18 inches off the ground, then she jumps off of it in the morning. That can't help if it's some sort of fracture.

I have some younger silkies (who would get seriously bullied) sleeping in the dog crate that I could otherwise keep her in. If she needs to stay off the perch I guess she could sleep in a box in the house? Gotta keep everyone safe from the 'coons.

Here are some new pictures. Any ideas would be really appreciated!

@DobieLover it does look to me like osteopetrosis or “marble leg disease,” which is related to lymphoid leukosis virus in chickens. There is not a great deal of info about this disease, but I have seen quite a few of these over the last few years here on BYC. There was a biologist (@swerning ) on BYC several years ago who was interested in research about this. Here is some reading about this:
