Two Tons of Sand

I thought about having sand delivered, but that would mean I'd have to shovel it into the coop myself. I picked up 6 bags of sand (just enough to cover the coop floor) at Home Depot. It was easier to carry each 50 lb bag to the coop and dump it in.

They offered 2 kinds at the quarry. One they called masons sand and when I opened the sample jar it was kind of dusty and fine. The other they called asphalt sand and that is what I bought. I don't think any of it was washed, except from the rain.

Someone on here suggested getting those tubes of sand they sell to weight a truckbed.
I checked & Home Depot sells a 60# tube for $3.47

Cheaper than the bagged sand, and if it has some gravel & rocks mixed in that's only more grit for the chickens.

Right now I have a heavy duty tarp laid in about 1/2 my fenced yard with about 1" of stonedust over that. I used landscape pins to hold the tarp in place.
The chickens are fine with that and have to walk over the tarp to get into & out of the coop into the yard.

This weekend I'll pick up the tubes of sand and dump them over the stonedust.

No more muddy feet! No more muddy eggs!
