Lost only one 2 days after receiving the 50 :-)
These are eating machines, I can't wait for them to be big enough not to fit between the steel cloth fence's holes so I can let them outside.
The pipe across in the coop is 4 nipple waterers. The chicks learned how to use it in 30 minutes without me demonstrating a thing. These birds FLY like crazy, I got to swat them out of the air or they land outside and the dogs can hardly wait :-)
Using pine shavings for bedding, they are perfect. I figure next week I can remove the box and let them sit on the wire, but maybe 2 more weeks depending on the foot size. These chicks eat a huge amount of food.

Nice set up! I would worry about them falling behind the cardboard since I know my little ones like to find all of the cracks to hide in.

I was thinking you have a little boy there - I bet he is loving all of the babies!

They go in the gaps then back in the box all the time. The lamps' clamps are very strong. He is indeed a boy :-)

Bahachick, how old are your SLW? I am getting some on Wednesday and trying to figure out how to tell them all apart since I got Australorps and Barred Plymouth Rocks. WHY did I order ones that all look similar? Love your chicks and little boy. Bet he loves them.

Well I got them exactly 2 weeks ago from Morris Hatchery. They were the only hatchery that were able to provide me with a Certificate of Health and a lady called Bruna there bent over backwards to accommodate my miniscule order by their standards (Would be a $500 minimum order otherwise) and sent me only 50 chicks. They were only like $1.79 each fully vaccinated. They were pretty much hand delivered as they are in Miami and the chicks had to be dropped off in Ft. Lauderdale at 7 am. I got them here on the island around 5 pm. I noticed some had a few small feathers on the wings but none had tail feathers at all. I suspect they were 2-3 days old when I got them. My son's idea of chicken handling is trying to swat or grab them :-) Needless to say the ensuing panic entertains him immensely. I got 100' of chicken wire and will add that to the existing 2x4 wire cloth fencing to prevent necks to be stuck out and paws from coming in today. Tomorrow these guys will spend some time outside the first time.
I am yet to figure how to collect them when it is time to get inside, maybe the pool skimming net will be utilized? :-)
It is sunny and 72F right now. Will drop to 62F tonight. The two brooder lamps are 100W each, one has a regular the other one an infrared bulb. I got space in the coop for only about 15-18 adults so I am trying to sell the other 30 or so before they grow out the space.

Bahachick. Thanks for the info. Also GOOD LUCK catching those little buggers if you let them out tomorrow. Wish I was a fly and could watch all this. They will have fun and so will you, LOL Can't wait to get mine on Wednesday!
