hello, I have been battling some sort of infection with one of my ducks since August. She has an eye infection (her one eye has been very weepy and stained down) which I believe may be linked to a respiratory infection which her body has been fighting off. I was recommended Tylan 50, however tractor supply only had Tylan 200. Would anyone be able to provide me with information as far as dosage? The employee at tsc said I could use it and just quarter the dose. Has anyone else had experience with this? This is the injectable kind.

You can use it. The Tylan 200 dose is no less than 0.05 ml per pound every 6-8 hours. Tylan can cause injection site reactions, so probably best to give it orally.

Note that most posts regarding Tylan doses are wrong. Tylan given to birds requires a higher dose than cattle and it must be given several times a day.

@casportpony i was thinking about heading to another tractor supply to get the Tylan 50 because I don’t want to do any damage. Could you give me any resources or information pertaining to what dosage she would require? How many ml for how many days? I believe the last post I saw said five days

Sorry I missed this.

The Tylan 50 dose is 0.2 ml per pound 6-8 hours. Can cause injection site reactions, so I would give it orally instead.

When you say orally you mean I can use the injection suspension? My duck clearly has an eye infection and it may be linked to a respiratory infection. Around which time she’s been having a swollen hock and not putting weight on one of her legs. However she is able to move it around and it’s not broken. She’s on meta cam twice a day for pain and it has decreased swelling substantially but I think it’s linked. The guy at tractor supply said he would try this first with his duck because it will help with soft tissue infections and then go to deworming as she has lost weight. And I’ve tried everything. The vet also had prescribed us an oral sulfa antiobiotic a little less then a month ago.

Yes, give the injectable orally. If the Tylan doesn't clear up her infection you could try Baytril. And you're right, a respiratory infection like mycoplasma can affect the leg joints.

Ok. Started it tonight. Just for clarification how many days exactly should I do this for. Also if I go the baytril route does that mean we should never eat her eggs? I saw someone post something along those lines a while back.

Give it today and tomorrow and check back in with an update Wednesday night or Thursday morning, but be prepared to give it for 5 days.

Baytril, yeah, it's not supposed to be used in poultry, but lots of people do. I have used it and I still eat the eggs.
