Tylan 50 Dosage for a Turkey

Does anyone know if there is a withdrawal tome for eggs if you are using Tylan 50 injectable (given orally)? I am going to start treating my turkey tonight. Thanks for all of the helpful info!

Hi there! I have been reading and reading for a few days now on dosage/method for treating a turkey with an upper respiratory issue with Tylan 50. I see that most people have moved away from the IM injection and opt for giving orally, but some are giving sub-q. My boy isn't tolerating the oral option very well, so I'd like to try the sub-q method. I'm a little confused as to whether I can give it once a day or does it need to be twice a day. I am also giving Denegard in his water, but he's not drinking much. Thank you in advance and I apologize for asking for a rehash of the subject again. I just want to be sure I do this correctly.

Welcome to BYC!

It really needs to be given 3-4 times a day, never once a day. How much does your turkey weigh and why isn't he tolerating the oral method? Perhaps we can help you with that.

Thank you for your quick response! He's a royal palm adult, so approximately 10lbs? He starts gasping like he's struggling to breathe. I know the first assumption is that I'm giving it too fast, but that is not the case. (I work with injured/orphaned wildlife as well. They are very prone to aspiration so I'm overly cautious of that.) It is almost as though he panics when I'm trying to give the meds. The first day I thought he was dying on me, pretty much collapsed afterward. I thought the injection would be less stressful for him?

You need to weigh him. An adult Royal Palm tom weighs more than ten pounds. I have dressed out several of them and the dressed weight was 15 lbs. meaning the live weight was more. If you don't have an accurate live weight you cannot figure out the proper dosage.

I will do my best to weigh him tonight. I have a scale that should work. Now that he knows what I'm going to do, he starts when I get near him. Gets worse as I try to give the meds. The sneezing and coughing does seem to be getting better so I think the meds are working. I just don't want to do more damage than good.

I just did the math on the Tylan *chicken* dose that a vet recommended, and for a 10 pound birds it's no less than 2 ml 3-4 times a day. One reference I have says that turkeys should get 60 mg per pound per day, so that's 3 ml 4 times a day for a 10 pound bird.
