Tylan 50 dose?

My 10 day old peachicks weigh about 100 grams, so I'm gonna guess that a 10 day old Silkie chick is much smaller. 50 grams maybe? @Eggcessive , what dose in mg/kg would you recommend?

Math for a 50 gram chick (0.05 kg)
0.05 kg x recommended dose / 50 = # of ml to give a 50 gram chick.

Based on the above, and what the recommended Tylan Powder dose is (110 mg/kg per day), I would give no more than 0.06 ml *twice* a day.

1/4 ml (cc) is way too much for a 10 day old Silkie.

0.05 x 110 / 50 / 2 = 0.055 ml (cc)

I am looking for advice on dosing my birds. I've read through this topic and think I might have overdosed one of my Birchin Bantam roosters last night.

He was starting to move a little slower and his comb had flopped over some. I've had about 6 or so hens die in the last few months but not sure what is causing it. The presumption is some kind of respiratory infection so I decided to try the Tylan 50 injectable from my local nursery to be preventative in this case.

I pulled 1ml into a syringe for the first time Saturday night, gassed it off and pulled the skin up from the neck to inject the entire 1cc. No troubles with that injection or with the second one (same dose) Sunday night. Last night, Monday, I did the same but this time he kind of stumbled away. I thought it might be from shining the light in his eyes and maybe he was disoriented so I waited a but until he seemed to be OK. I woke up this morning to my rooster face down in the dirt. This one was a real bummer since he was part of a mating pair that were really sweet.

I am not sure what to do next. I want to order another rooster for the hen but I am hesitant since I have had so many birds die in the last few months.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Peter

Welcome to BYC! How much does the rooster weigh?

Thank you for the reply. I did not weigh him but my estimate would be around 1-1.5lbs. He was a dense bird but definitely bantum size. The recommendation on the tylan instructions was 1-1.5cc for a full grown bird so I went with the smaller dose but thinking now it must have been too much.

I doubt that's what killed him. Sometimes just restraining them to give shots is enough to send them over the edge. Would be best to send him off for a necropsy... Where do you live?

I am in southwest Florida. He didn't resist much at all and was generally very good with being handled. He was a show bird years before I got him and had been handled a lot by his previous owner.

I had her put down. She was so close to death. It is so upsetting to me. My other Sussex is sick now. She was roosting alongside the sick chick yesterday. I started her this morning on 1/2 cc Tylan. Is that the right amount? I can't find the post here that said ppl were underdosing with tylan. Should I give more than 1/2 cc? I dont want to have them all put down. Should I start the other one on tylan too. I am going to disinfect the cage and feeders and waters today. I know this is TMI but this is tortuous

So sorry for your loss. :hugs
The Tylan 50 dose recommended by the vets on a Facebook group is no less than 0.2 ml per pound of body weight every 6-8 hours.

If I were you and couln't give the Tylan every 6-8 hours I would use Baytril instead. Baytril dose is 4.54 mg per pound *orally* twice a day for 3-5 days.

If you don't want to use Baytril, and you can't give Tylan every 6-8 hours, give it every 12 hours and give 0.5 ml per pound.
