I’ve got six 3year olds, one 2 year old and five 5 month olds. Most of the adult birds have runny poop and/or pasty butt. I’ve heard several sneezes from everyone over the last few days. Two of the older birds have been gaping, are losing weight, their feathers are messy, and one has clear discharge from her nares and mouth when she shakes her head. Is it safe to administer Tylan via their water to the whole flock?

The weather has been hot and humid, but is now temperate and humid. Sky high pollen counts and the mold spore and smut counts are always off the charts. No change in feed, I did add some Nutridrench to their water yesterday and will change it out for clear water today. Everyone is molting, most are molting hard. I’ve posted several threads about this problem, but haven’t really gotten any advice. I’m thinking respiratory infection now as I’ve ruled out crop issues. Any thoughts on the Tylan?

Tylan or Tylosin is an antibiotic that treats mycoplasma or MG. It is one of the few approved for poultry, but I don’t like treating birds unless they have symptoms. Infectious bronchitis is a virus that can cause sneezing and mild congestion, plus wrinkled egg shells. Tylan won’t treat that. If you are not seeing really sick birds with eye bubbles/foam, swollen eyelids, I would suspect IB virus. Illnesses occur mire often during periods of stress, such as molting or extreme hot or cold weather. So, I would give probiotics for the loose droppings, consider worming, and only treat with Tylan if you see some symptoms of MG, or ones who are very ill. Tylosin powder is available here:
