Tylon 50

My chickens also have some sort of respiratory illness. We called the vets, but none treat chickens. They referred us to the State Vet that said it would cost us $40 for the visit and $90 for a nasal swab test. We can't afford that. We had tried the Duramycin 10 on other chickens who first showed these symptoms, but it did not seem to help them. So after reading on here, and not getting any feedback as to what to do, I decided to go with the Tylan 50 injectable given by mouth. I could not wait any longer as the Ameraucanas were getting worse. I gave the Ameraucana roos a little bit more than a half cc and I gave the 3 and 4 month Silkies a half cc. I also have one Silkie mix, that I gave a half cc to as well.

Do you treat for 7 days as it states in the packaging for other animals? Or do you do the three days? I do NOT want this to return. I am just hoping that it stops these symptoms.

The other two hens died, and we had no chickens showing symptoms until later.

If the pens are only separated by wire, should I treat ALL the chickens? What about the hens that were treated for 7-14 days with the Duramycin 10 that are not showing symptoms. Should I also treat those with Tylan even though they are not presently showing any symptoms? Should I treat the Silkies in the back pen (also separated from the sick pen by wire) even if they are not showing symptoms? If I wait, will they reinfect the others or will they be immune?

I don't know how this happened as I have not recently gotten any new chickens.

I hope the Tylan 50 works... I am so afraid of losing my flock!!

I have read a ton of forms this weekend and the most common thing I have found people saying is they didn't get a response to their questions- I am suffering from chicken bugers as well and have isolated my sick bird. I would say from all the reading, chicken things spread fast an easy so wire isn't enough to prevent other chickens from getting sick.

I don't have an answer about retreating already treated birds, but from what I've read you can put 3cc of tylon 50 in 1 gallon of water to treat birds even without symptoms. And 5 days is the length I've most commonly heard. I'm actually on vacation and its making it hard to relax thinking when I get home i'll have a bunch of sick birds. Tylon is just an antibiotic so im assuming the same rules apply to that as humans, like the building up of immunity to the antibiotic, so im not sure if i'll use it in the water or just the sick birds.

I also got Vet Rx at Tractor supply, which is something like vicks for humans but its not an antibiotic - im going to evaluate the situation when I return and decide my plan of attack. I know I'll be giving them all elecrolytes and vitamin water!

Best of Luck!

Tylan 50 can be given orally or by injection into the breast muscle. Dosage is 1/4 ml daily for 3-5 days. For older birds dosage is 1/2 -1 ml daily. Some give it twice a day.
