Type of Fencing?

I want my chicken to be able to roam around our property during the day,but 1) I won't be there all the time as we would like to let them out of the coop in the morning and lock them up at night. 2) we are near a highway and I don't want them to be road-kill. What is the best and cheapest way to fence them onto 1/2 - 1 acre?

Either 4 x 4 posts and welded wire or chain link. I would choose based upon cost. Either will keep them in. Chicken wire is so flimsy that it might not last more than a season, before it rusts away. I find chain link to be easier to work with. If you have some help, welded wire is not so bad. I have to do whatever myself.

I have 4 foot tall fencing. They stay inside on 3/4 acre with no problem.
