The vet said ducks this size will need a larger swimming space. Going to home depot to pick up a large pond, filter, etc.

We wanted to add fish to encourage the ducks to come in and swim, but I don't want them to be eaten. I know some have had luck with koi (But they're so expensive!). Are there any other fish that the ducks won't eat? Would they eat pleco?

Thanks!

Shubkins aren't as expensive as Koi and do get at least as big as some Koi. Also Large Fantail Goldfish.

Forget it. Unless you put something the size of full grown pike in there, your ducks are going to eat your fish. They don't have to be able to swallow the fish whole; they can take bites out of the fish and eat it piecemeal.

I don't really recommend pike as they will eat your ducks.

Ducks don't need a lot of encouragement to swim.

Our ducks don't mess around. If its in the water, they eat it. Watched one of them eat a frog last weekend.

Some ducks are naturally afraid of "new". Ours happen to be. When moving ducks/ducklings to new enclosures it takes a while for them to adapt to their new environment. That being said- They don't want to go in the water. We moved them out today, and they've sat in the same place all day. I herded them near the water, and they flew back to where they were (Yes, my pekins can fly).

I might buy some pleco later...
