Chiknlady - I agree that it is a sad state when the only way to get food that won't kill you is to grow it yourself. We should be able to do better than that. Markets are extrememly efficient when it comes to making automobiles and the like but those same market forces don't work well when it comes to making food.
I understand what you are doing. I'm not saying that people should eat meat, only that it is not an unatural thing to do. I was thinking that you were struggling with wanting to eat meat but not happy with the sources of it. Eating more fruit and veggies is a good thing.
wow this has been very intresting...I have sat here on a saturday morning with my coffee and my kids still in bed readiing this...and it really makes me thankful that I live so close to everything...
I live in Guelph Ontario...
my next door neighbour is the local feed mill he grows all his own feed to sell to the local farmers (or the local farmer sells it to him)
over 2 street (rural roads) is a beef farmer
over a few more streets is a dairy farmer and in town is the Gaylea foods so as long as I stick to that brand I know where the milk has come from
I am
for my own eggs any day now
about 20 minutes up the highway from me is a HUGE menonite community of St. Jacobs and there every week they have fresh local grown produce and even little "mom and pop" farmers selling thier goods (all have been inspected)...
times are really getting tough in some ways all the progress in high tech gear has made us dependant on "the BIG guy" and its not until i moved out into the country (I was born and raised in Toronto) that it started to hit me about how much my kids rely on the TV or the X-Box so now what I have done this summer is said to my teen go get a job at one of the local farms. I have 2 other children who are to young to work but they help here in the house..both of them help me with the chickens. we only have 10 so its not a whole day thing..my daughter helps me hang the clothing on the line (have not used my dryer since march) I hope by doing this I will help them learn that local is always better..
as my 2 fave bumpers sticker say
have you eaten today? thank a farmer
Out of a job yet? keep buying foregin
On a foot note...if I cant buy Canadian I will buy USA but never Mexico or any where else...this applies to food only unfortunatly I cant be as picky with everything else I dont want to live like Laura Ingles on Little house on the Pararie...now thats going a little far...I need my fix of Dr. House and NCIS...lol
