I was just thinking the same thing.
I heard that song again on the oldies show my radio station has every sunday morning,

"consider the person, let's say this person is Mexican, who is kidnapped and dumped, left for dead, high in the Rockies, who uses the U.S. flag for shelter, warmth, to bandage a wound, or tears off a red stripe to signal for help. This person could be anyone, not only Mexican: a mother with a child, a descendant of someone who stepped off the Mayflower, a member of the Kalispell tribe caught in a snowstorm during a hunt, a person who is caught between the decision to transport their beloved therapy dog down a mountain by using the flag as a gurney, "

This is when "old Glory" is at her best....

I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher, my colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped I am saluted.
I am loved I am revered.
I am respected and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war
for more than 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg,
Shiloh and Appomattox.

I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome
and the beaches of Normandy, Guam.
Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me,
I was there.

I led my troops,
I was dirty, battle-tested and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.

America has been attacked by cowardly fanatics
And many lives have been lost
But those who would destroy me cannot win
For I am the symbol of freedom,
Of one nation
Under God
Indivisible
With liberty and justice for all.

I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn
and trampled on the streets of my country.
And when it's by those whom I've served in battle it hurts.
But I shall overcome for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving parent
at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
I am proud.

MY NAME IS OLD GLORY
LONG MAY I WAVE.

I did not read all the way through all of the post here so ifin this has been covered I apologize.

Our tradition for flying the flag at half-mast has been over used. If I remember right this was done on only very serious conditions. Now it seems to be done for just about any public figure. I hope I have not offended with this post. Its just my opinion and observation.

Good job on getting McDonald to do the right thing.

I have full respect for our flag and all who have fought under it. And, I will defend it in any circumstance where it is being disrespected.

But, to me the flag is as much about what it means as it is the physical cloth.

I truly dislike seeing people disrespect the flag and get furious about people mistreating it. But, it is like freedom of speech. I will defend to the death your right to tell me you hate me.

Part of the amazing thing that the flag stands for is our refusal to venerate objects, or people, over ideas.

I also carry a copy of the Constitution all the time......

I remember the case in your state where some mexican kids thought it was fun to fly the flag upside down below the mexican flag. THey should have hung them up by their undies on the pole.

This was TRUE--it did occur. However, the high school where the incident occurred was not involved in the incident. Two neighboring high school's protesters changed the flags around. There is also nothing that says the kid who did it was "Mexican". I believe this is where the information may be becoming racially skewed. He was probably a U.S. citizen and part of a group of protesters who were also U.S. citizens.

Here's another source pretty similar to the one posted in the above quote:

Here is a "false" report of a television interview with an illegal immigrant that has been circulated about a Mexican kid in Texas:

Some of this is just propaganda, folks--designed to get a rise out of people. In effect, believing everything and passing on information like this can lead to more racism.
