New life is excellent therapy!
But seriously, try the two door method next time--it's almost foolproof. Just make sure that there are two barriers separating pups and chicks at all times. Then if one gets left open, it's just a little annoying rather than tragic. I used it with my killer cats and all chicks made it to adulthood. Murphy's law tried to get them by making one door open itself, but the chicks made it because of the lid on the brooder. Back when I still had dogs, I lost pets to them more than once before I figured it out, though, so I do know that pain. I'm sorry for your loss and hope you'll feel better soon.
