I have personally seen copperheads in places that they had to climb to get to - like way up on my doorframe.

Okay, good to know that that is not true. Wonder what the qualifications of the guy were? Obviously not as good as they ought to have been, lol.

I have had a small corn snake kill a budgie when it escaped, he went on ad tried to eat my cockateil, the cockateil screamed, the budgie didn't.... catch and release snakes if possible.

Yuck.. I hate and fear snakes. We had one so far trying to get in my garage. It was a kingsnake so my hubby got him and put him way in our back yard on the hill. Our neighbors two houses over killed two rattle snakes. One of which was at their front door on the porch in the evening !!! It was coilled up too.

They cut its head off and made chili out of them. I have heard a rattle snake way up on the hill but I just went inside and figured he was way in the back and away from my hens so I would just wait for him to go away.
One thing around here we do is let the dogs out first so that they will alert us. Kids are not supposed to go out first just in case. Also I prefer my garage never to be left open and we do not leave door open. Last time I left door open for a few min. and next thing you know a scorpian was crawling down my hallway.

Well my coop isn't snake proof, and that I don't mind and never had a snake problem until this year. Didn't keep a flock till this year had bad racoon problems and had to get everything roofed from them. Pretty much putting it mild/y this snake visited quite often this year and killed a number of birds till it ate my biggest silkie. Here is.the pic. He got in but couldnt get out. Normally i relocate but this time I was just mad and killed.

I don't fear snakes and dont advocate fear of snakes. I do have a younger one and a 14 year old son and we do kill Copperheads. My oldest son almost got bitten this summer by a Copperhead playing basketball. Ball landed by the snake and scared it. It lashed out at him. Biggest Osage Copperhead I have ever seen i think. We killed that one just to keep ky little one safe. Sorry if that angers anyone but it is how we do it.

Oh, yes, the snakes -- I'm all for live and let live...but my ex-boyfriend killed one snake that had not only a golf ball but two chicks in there, too. He couldn't figure out what the "dimples" were on the apparent egg, but upon autopsy, discovered the golf ball....geez!

can you hear me now? :

My dimple in that picture was our largest silkie chick.

Im sorry for you lose. Silkies are so beautiful. Im just hoping that no snakes come near my babies. I didn't have a problem with snakes before with my earlier batch from july but im scare for the new babies since it was rainy here last week and now its getting hot again. I am all for dead snakes, my chickens will kill the bugs and mice for me, and the dogs got the big rats. LOL

I hear ya there. That snake had made away with about 8 total chicks. First time I had lost.chicks to a.snake. wish it was gonna get hot here. Cooling off for a little while. I do know it means snakes are done for the year but I love warm weather better. Can't wait to move south, in about 14 years.

Grew up in northwest Indiana, gets too cold up there and I don't miss it. The wi.gets here arent bad at all but i love to be outdoors and can handle heat better than cold. Plans to move towards grandparents land in south Texas when wife is ready to go which may be longer or.shorter than 14 years.
