I don't think it's awful if the hamster is somehow the distraction that's keeping the daughter from studying/doing homework, etc. But if it's just a punishment to "show you I mean business," and had nothing to do with the problem, then I certainly don't think it's appropriate.
 
That's sad whats that gonna teach her child? To hate her mom for a long time?

We don't know the full situation. The animal could be the distraction from doing homework or anything

Not enough info to base an opinion really.....just speculation.
 
It doesn't matter if the animal is a distraction or not. Doing that is teaching the child pets are disposable and it's bad for the animal in question, too.
